No video but audio

I'm still using version 6. I just purchased a Canon SD1100 IS digital camera that can take videos in AVI format. (640x480 at 30 fps) The files opens up in Windows movie maker Ok or nero but when I put it on the timeline in Vegas Movie Studio only the audio shows up and can be heard. I have been using this program for several years now without any problems with my video cameras. What am I missing ? I don't want to use movie maker. I perfer Vegas. Please help? Thanks.

Try searching this forum for "MJPEG" or "Motion JPEG". That is likely the format inside your .avi files, and you will likely need a codec to edit the video. You'll find suggestions on which codecs in your search.

Newer versions of Movie Studio don't require a codec, which you'll also read about in your search results.

I had a similar problem back a few months ago. Try going to the forum thread (http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?MessageID=604472&Replies=4). Forum regular Eugenia steered me in the right direction to solve the problem.

Chances are, with a Canon camera, that the format is Motion JPEG, but your mileage may vary...

Yes I belive you are right, it is motion jpeg. In which case what can be done. I check out the links above, but didn't have any idea what to do after I installed the programs?

If you followed the links for the thread mentioned above, you may have installed the incorrect codecs.

Search for Morgan MJPEG or Pegasus MJPEG. They both have free downloads. I looked into this recently and general opinion here and on other Sony boards was that Pegasus might be the way to go. Install the trial, then try again. You should see video...

I would like to thank everyone for your suggestions. Here is what I have found out so far.

If I import the file into Windows Movie Maker, place the clip on the time line, select save movie file, name it and point to the location where I want it saved, chose other settings and select DV-AVI (NTSC) 720 x 480 and then open it up into Vegas it works fine. Make my changeds etc, render using default template it plays great. However I have notice there must be some hidden files because when it is burning, it syncro.... after wriing which takes up quite a lot of DVD space. It does not write a leadout.. Can't fiqure? The orginal file is 640 x 480. The movie when played back on my TV is excellent. I will do a search on Pegasus MJPEG. Thanks again.

Blowing a VGA video to DV size is loss of quality. I would suggest find a codec for this video and use it directly on Vegas.

If there was a loss in quality I didn't see it. It looks fine to me on the TV . Not mutch different from my Panasonic 320 video camera. Vegas did a fine job on the render. Coming from a ultra compact digital camera I think the qualiy was better than I expected. I will stay with this system until I upgrade to ver. 9 if it has the codec for this. Thanks for the input.
