Noise Reduction 2.0b Startup

randy-stewart wrote on 9/29/2004, 11:11 PM
Bought NR, downloaded from site, ran the installer, but no icon, program file or instructions to startup (including in the manual). Checked the knowledge base and found startup instructions which say to go to my audio editor and choose the Direct X plug-in. I have Vegas 5 so went to a veg file, selected the audio clip, right click and then selected apply non-real time FX which got me to the audio FX chain with all four files that Noise Reduction says it has (noise reduction, click crackle removal, vinyl restoration, and one other). I add one and expect the screen to ask me to type in a serial number but none comes up and the title says demo. Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong? Can I start NR as a stand alone? Appreciate any help.
Randy

Congratulations! You have bought a great app.
My NR manual is a separate .exe file, so I believe is was a separate download. I seem to remember that it asked about registration at one point, but can't remember when. Is the demo mode giving you trouble, as in not working 100%? have you re-read the confirmation mail?
You can't run NR as a standalone, and you may find it easier to run it under Sound Forge (or another audio editor). But the manual explains what you must do in Vegas as well.

The standard advise on NR is that three small steps is better than one great leap. But you must take a new noise sample for each step.

Thanks for responding Tor. Since my post I called Sony to try and figure out why I'm getting DEMO on the top of the Noise Reduction FX box when it comes up in Vegas. While we are both still stumped, we think it's because Vegas 5 has a demo (unlimited time) in it and Vegas is still seeing only that version. The installation I did for my full copy of NR ended up in a Sonic Foundry folder (by default) instead of the Sony folder. When I get home, I'll try uninstalling NR and then reinstalling it in the Sony folder. I'll also try to disable the demo NR that is somewhere in the Vegas 5 folders (I think). That should get me to the full version and ultimately enable me to register the software. Thanks again for the encouragement and trying to help.

Randy, you can also just drag the DLL to Vegas' timeline to register it, or you can drag it to the DX plugin folder as well.
Try clicking the Sony icon in NR to get to the reg screen.

Thanks Spot. I tried clicking the Sony name in the pop-up window but that didn't work. I'll try the other suggestions when I get home.

P.S. Bought the PD-170 last week and used it on a wedding shoot Saturday. WOW! I'm happy.

If the PD-170 is anything like the PD-150, I'm not surprised you neede the noise Reduction plug-in ; - ) (It's been called a workhorse, but it sounds like a tractor.)

Actually needed the noise reduction for footage shot with a Cannon XL1. So far the Sony is doing great. Of course, used wireless lav's and external mic's for vows and later interviews during the reception. Learned a lot about adjusting input levels and wireless setup. Having great fun!

Think I might have found the answer in the knowledge base under reinstall:

"If you let the 7 day grace period expire, the plugin will drop down into a demo mode. You will need to pass your cursor over the Sony logo, right click it, and choose About. From the screen that comes up, click 'upgrade' in the lower right hand corner. You should then be on the screen that requests your serial number again."

I bet that will work. Will try it and post either way.

Argh! Right click, not click. My mistake. I knew it was there, just forgot it was a right click rather than a click.

No worries. When I first saw the para, I said outloud "ha, Spot called it again" so you got partial credit anyway :-).

Well, so far no luck with any of the ideas given and even a few more born of frustration. I'm beginning to think Service Pak 2 might have something to do with this problem. I've uninstalled, reinstalled (in several different directories) many times, looked for .dll files, deleted files, and still, the software will not let me get to an upgrade page or registration page so I can input my key number provided by Sony. It's stuck in demo mode. Spot's idea to click (albeit right click) on the Sony name when the Noise Reduction window pops up worked as far as getting me to the pop-up screen with the upgrade button in the lower right hand corner but that dang button just won't work. It depresses but nothing happens. I can get to the Sony products splash page when I depress the Sony name at the top left and clicking on the hot link provide on the page but nothing gets me to a place to input a number. I'll have to try and get off work early to call Sony due to the time difference and Sony tech support not being open tomorrow. If anyone has any ideas, please throw them out. By the way, the download file is only about 9MB. Is that right? Thanks in advance.
Aloha,
Randy

Update: Got through to Sony and they have the fix. It's not a Service Pak 2 or XP issue. I'll have to use the by e-mail registration method (since I can't get back to them in time today with my SN) and they will send me a new registry file to install that will fix my problem. Feeling better now. Thanks to Brian at Sony for knowing exactly what I needed to do. Now, just hope it works.
Aloha,
Randy

Still no joy with Noise Reduction problem. The new registry update file will not install. Still stuck in Demo mode and it's expired. Error statement says "Cannot import (file name) error accessing the registry". I'm at wits end. Can't call Sony as they are closed. Will have to wait until Monday. Bummer. I wonder if I reinstalled Vegas 5, would that have any effect? Thoughts?

Sony fixed the problem. It was in the registry file. Noise Reduction permissions were not turned on for me as a user. I had to go into the registry, key codes, and under Noise Reduction (in the Sonic Foundry folder), right click, go to permissions, and then check two boxes for full read and write permissions. After doing that, the registry update (downloaded from Sony) file worked fine and I was able to get to the registration screen in Noise Reduction and register my copy. I'm a happy editor. Hope this helps if anyone else has this problem.
