Noise reduction (fan hum) Vegas 13

JVPhilly wrote on 9/29/2016, 9:52 PM

Hi,

I have Vegas 13 and I'm working on a project with voice narration. Unfortunately, during recording there was a fan in the room as well as a computer's fan making their way onto the recording, hence leaving me with a noisy background hum I'd like to get rid of. Is there any FREE software that can minimize the hum or is there any way to use Vegas's audio FX to minimize the hum? I see a few expensive plug-ins for this type of thing but don't have it in the budget right now.

Audacity is free and is very good.  I used it before and I like it.

Does it have a "learn" function (like WAVES X-Noise, Z-Noise or iZotope RX) where it can sample the background noise and suppress just that?

I also have Audacity here.

Yes, there is. Select background sample noise, then Effects>Noise Removal.

Then follow Step1, then select all, then adjust settings in Step 2. Click preview to hear the result.

Btw, Bruce, any tips on how to adjust these settings? Even though I can remove the bg noise, sometimes 'the main audio' is also affected.

Set,  How I adjust noise level is base on how much noise I want to remove.  As you have said, remove big noise can effected the main audio also.  So there is a trade off.

Thanx for the Audacity idea. I didn't know it could sample a few seconds of the noise. I'll give it a try.
