Normalize event to -24dB OR event gain envelope to -24dB? Possible?

The lowest setting for normalizing events is -12dB in Preferences. I would like to set it to -24dB but it doesn't go this low. As a workaround I tried the event gain envelope but the dB increments are too large as you approach this value, and the closest I can get is -23dB.

Is there a way to get Vegas 5 to set the event normalize/ASR to -24dB in a predictable, repeatable manner per event? I can't seem to get it to work.

Sony - Can the "Normalize peak level" setting in Preferences be revised to allow excursions above 0dB and below -12dB for future builds?

Try holding the "Shift" button when adjusting the ASR event envelope, this will give you finer adjustments. Also try increasing the track height and it will allow better control using a mouse. You could also use the volume envelope which gives .1dB adjustments by hitting the "V" key to turn it on.

Rednroll, thanks for the reply. Holding the "Shift" button works in .1dB increments down to around -10dB, then it gets coarser from there. I can't get it to land on -24dB. Even with the track height zoomed right in it doesn't want to do it. I considered the track volume envelope but I'm trying to drop the event gain at the earliest gain stage in the Vegas mixer. Doing so allows me much more headroom before hitting the track plug-ins.

I guess I could settle with the -23dB that the ASR gain gives me and not get hung up on the -24dB figure. In the end it doesn't really matter but I wanted to find out if others found a way to accomplish this in some way that I haven't yet discovered.

Anyone have any other thoughts?

Try the guys in the scripting forum - they may be able to write a quick something for you.

I wasn't saying to zoom in for the track height. I observed the same thing you did. What you need to do is increase the track height, by going to the left and draging the bottom of the track and increasing it's height that way, and this helps the resolution a little more when you get near the -24dB point.

Sorry Rednroll, I didn't get what you were saying. I thought you meant "zoom", but I will try increasing the track height tonight by dragging the bottom of the track in the track header.

Thank you for your help.

Here's another way to do it, that I just thought of that you might find easier. First Normalize it to 0dB or -12dB by setting that value in the properties. Then right click on the event and select "Apply non-realtime event FX". Then select the volume track fader and set it too -24.0dB or -12dB (depending on your normalize value) by typing in the value and hit ok.

That DX volume track fader has shown itself to be more useful than I thought.

I've never tried that. Thanks for the tip! This will unfortunately alter the wave file destructively and I was hoping for a non-destructive method.

Actually it allows you to save as a new file, and your undos are still intact even with this process.

Rednroll, I appreciate the help. I tried all of your suggestions and was able to get the ASR gain to -24dB after adjusting the track height to almost full screen. I tried using the volume plug-in and have now discovered a few uses for that plug that never occured to me before. Thanks for leading me to that one.
