Perhaps Toshiba can use their manufacturing capacity to make Blu-Ray players. It might be a way to recoup some of their investment. Even Sony eventually made VHS machines, even though they continued to make BetaMax machines for a while longer as well.

As I understand it, both Toshiba and Sony protected themselves well before this all started. They both more or less bought the rights to produce each other's format should things go bad. It may be a format war.... but they're not dumb!

Guys, you're fooling yourselves: I have it on good authority (blink3times) that the format war hasn't even started yet.

"As I understand it, both Toshiba and Sony protected themselves well before this all started. They both more or less bought the rights to produce each other's format should things go bad. It may be a format war.... but they're not dumb!" I do not think any major BD group member bought into the HD DVD format because of the MS menu contro issuel-------- and as demonstrated by Samsung being sued, MS and HD DVD group would not let playing movies without MS menu control be acceptable. Toshiba can still sell HD DVD players for computers, but the studios have a problem when Walmart won't stock the movies.

I think the question is, can Universal stay HD DVD and take the cost hit; MS alliance has some $$ with NBC but will it cover the cost of the bottom line and the image of being second class citizen in Hollywood. Many big name directors and producers will stay? ;-)

MS is re-aligning management, and has many market battles,(of their choice), going on,----phones, yahoo,etc.....google....apple....linux. ;-)

Well its now public information, the US military is trying to get rid of MS in management and field command systems------ going to linux. MS knew that the DOD since 2002 was not happy with it's support. MS alliance with SCO had many faces......................... now with this in the limited public view, will MS move marketing effort, ie HD DVD, to the linux war. The DOD deals and licenses are major $$$, are so big direct and indirect business( plus foreign countries) 100% lost would make MS about 1/3-2/3 smaller------ I doubt it would be permitted to a total "out the door", but the MS welfare check will be a lot smaller.

Fred... I know it's hard, but you have to get over me.... I'm married. Try for just one day not to think about me.

It's true. The format war has not started and never will.

It was obvious blueray would win, there never was a war or any doubt about that. It was a massacre from day one.

A wee bit of exaggeration perhaps?

In fact BD was floundering pretty good when it first came out. It was the PS3 that turned things around.

"Fred... I know it's hard, but you have to get over me.... I'm married. Try for just one day not to think about me." Humor!-Blink!--- turning sour milk into cheese----------- ;-)

But, Blink, just for old times sake, can you say sometime like---"HD DVD will conquer and destroy Sony" or better, please,-- ;-) or like "MS Drones have invaded Japan and now are invading all Walmarts,Targets, BestBuys to run HD media!".... ;-) just kidding...........maybe.............. time to hit Starbucks for the latest political gossip

maybe, but from the very beginning, we knew PS3 was coming, so that is one of the reasons it never really was a war or a fight

Just came from Best Buy and they have both huge HD-DVD and Bluray movie selections. They have also set up some much better HDTV demos , one of them with Samsung with the split screen comparison.
