Do you have the option to automatically adopt the project properties to the first added source media enabled in Options/Preferences/General?

Chuck-CIB wrote on 12/20/2018, 5:37 PM

Yes, I believe I do, unless there is another type of option some where.

Yes, that's it. I'll check with some of my own HDV media tomorrow.

Do you use latest build 352 of VP16?

Chuck-CIB - Your project pixel aspect ratio is set to square instead of 1.333.

Yes, that's what Vegas Pro is doing wrong in his case. When dropping such an HDV file into the timeline (if it is the first media), Vegas Pro should detect the 1.33 PAR and adopt the project properties.

I will update and test, I am still on build 307.

I know, that is part of the problem, my field order is not right either. Vegas 12 detects my correct Field Order and my correct PAR. Vegas 16 is not getting either of them correct, and is changing my clips properties as well. See my screen shots.

Build 352 is doing the same.

When I change to the correct template or change my Field order/PAR to the correct setting all of my clips are still messed up as shown here. I can fix it, but what a hassle to do everytime.

@NickHope, so this did only happen when the files were transcoded via VirtualDub?

@Chuck-CIB
Where do your HDV files come from? Directly from a camera or did you transcode the files to HDV using a software?

I now tested with my HDV footage recorded by an older Sony Camcorder and these HDV work fine in VP16 build 352 (and VP15 build 416). It means, the files are 1440x1080 and Vegas Pro correctly reads the 1.3333 PAR and adopts its project properties to it. The field order is set correctly, too, by VP16 and VP15 (upper first).

I think so, yes, and HDVSplit-captured HDV m2t files are reading correctly in VP16 even if I disable C:\ProgramData\VEGAS\VEGAS Pro\16.0\Vegas profiles.ini (I can't remember if the references to 1440x1080 in that file were there in vanilla Vegas or if I have added them).

Anyway I think the thread I linked to may hold the key in solving Chuck's problem.

I am using software to transcode the files and add the timestamp overlay to them. The files are uncompressed AVI files. I the original camcorder files are interpreted correctly, just not my transcoded ones any long in VP 16.

@NickHope Thanks for the link. @John_Cline post solved it for me.

"There is no mechanism in an AVI file to define aspect ratio or field order (except in the case of DV files.) If you place a clip on the timeline and go to Properties and then the Media tab, next to 'Stream" you will see a disk icon, set the parameters of your AVI file correctly and then click on the disk icon to save the profile. Next time Vegas encounters an AVI file using that codec, frame size and frame rate, it will apply the saved parameters for aspect ratio and field order."
