Okay . . Craftech: "What happened to all those other suggestions I gave you in the other thread you posted? Why did you download AVG? It doesn't detect viruses properly. "

AVG wouldn't install. I had to do a Ghost install . .everything work well. IMMEADIATELY I used my Norton disc - I had this - and installed and found viruses on the OTHER drives - NOT the C: . .

Now, I had 14 days to activate my full Norton. This I attempted yesterday. I could not get on the internet.

In the process and with the "assistance" of Norton Customer/Technical Services - I appear NOW to have been reinfected. MSCONFIG wont work; Media PLayer wont work; I can't uninstall Norton - In Fact Norton believes that it is STILL connected to the Internet, and stopping me from uninstalling it - I HATE it!

Craftech I did heed and act on what you said. I had Norton to do the scan .. It wasn't AVG .. I didn't use AVG on the new install . . I used Norton ..

So, soon, maybe Thursday, I'm gonna do another reinstall; have a copy of F-Prot to hand - as used per my PC builders .. they don't use Norton - and immeadialtey do a full scan. THEN I will keep this NLE pc OFF the internet. PERIOD!

I'm getting real good at installs! <BIG WINK> . ..

Just to throw the information out... Several years back a neighbor caught some nasty boot sector virus and try as he might, reformat, repartition, etc., he couldn't get rid of it. I asked him to show me EXACTLY all the steps he was doing. This was back when CD drives weren't that common and he didn't have one and he was running Windows 98 where you could boot from a floppy. Well it turns out what he was doing was reinfecting his system because he manged to copy the virus to the floppy he used to boot from after he reformatted. A smart boot virus will spawn itself thus bettering its chances to avoid being zapped. So as soon as he thought he had a 'clean' system right away he infected it again from the get-go by sticking in the floopy then the virus jumped onto his root drive again.

John...

I checked and while Network DDE is listed in services it wasn't set to automatic. Don't know what's calling it, I use to have some mini-network I used to link coputers upstairs, to downstairs via phone lines, but that's long gone.

Thanks for your help.

BB, hmmm ," he manged to copy the virus to the floppy he used to boot from after he reformatted. " .. . I use the PROTECTED non writable floppy that the factory uses in needing to re-Ghost the machine .. I'll ask them if this COULD be a factor . . hmmm... ;-(
