not letting me render in custom resolution - youtube shorts

I currently use movie studio 14 platinum

I know I am doing it wrong but don't know what I need to do. I imagine there will be a solution to my below query but I reckon there is a better way so if you happen to know a better way in general then that would be appreciated.

I do youtube videos so typically set up projects and render with the internet video template which is a 16:9 1920x1080. to do a youtube short you need a 9:16 ratio, I tried simply changing the resolution in the project (dont see an option for aspect ratio). looks fine in preview, and changing the resolution in a template so I have a custom template when rendering. But I get the error 'an error occured when creating a media file an invalid argument was specified'

how do i need my setting set up to allow a 9:16 video? is there a better way in general than i am tryng to do above?

Render to the biggest portrait template of the Mainconcept AVC codec and customize that one to 1080x1920 pixels,
