Not quite OT: Wireless mics and politics don't mix

Gordon Brown's gaffe may have cost him a general election.

Brings up some memories of my own:
-- Our lead actress going to the bathroom live and singing Madonna the whole time.
-- Hizzoner telling a dirty joke on a live mic just before officiating at a wedding ceremony.
-- Joe Biden of course, and his "BFD" remark.

At least the "BFD" remark was honest and in character.

A friend working MacWorld (or some big Apple thing) told me that they use encrypted mics for all the preshow setup and then switch to unencrypted wireless for the show. That was just to keep bits of presentations from leaking.

If you're a politician you need to just be politic, all the time. Or at least stay in character if you can't be politic. You can't trust that hired techs won't leak the incredibly offensive thing you said in a slack moment.

Especially since he represents the end of the Bush era in the UK.

I thought his biggest mistake was going round and apologising to her. I'd much rather he stuck to his guns and said "I thought her views on immigration were bigoted".

And yes, I'm sure most of us have been in such a wireless "situation" - I remember having to quickly take off headphones to avoid hearing a guest speaker going to the toilet.

You're right, Peter. That would've been a smarter move.

I think the bigger picture is that the other two candidates will now refocus on the economy and the media in the UK will follow suit. That in sharp contrast to the US where the conservative candidate would focus on the gaffe and the media would discuss nothing else for a solid week.

Guys, just keep this discussion to the mics, politics on a forum = flame bait no matter what it is, because someone else will inevitably feel differently.

There was a great cartoon in Playboy about 40 years ago when small cameras with microwave transmission were first introduced. Guy walks out of the mens room with his camera hanging down around his neck.
"John, did you know that your creepie-peepie was on?

Did audio on Larry King Live with Larry and Bill Clinton at the Clinton Library last year. Bill wouldn't wear a wireless, staff claimed his pacemaker made a ticking noise and would interfere - so we put a wireless on Larry and boomed Bill. Boom sounded like crap since it was so far away because of the wide shot and the room acoustics. I just think the staff didn't want Bill to get in trouble - again.
