Not tied to one computer?

I am interested in Vegas 5 and notice there seem to be 2 ways to own the product.

Install from trail/download (forces you to generate computer specific installation)

or

Install from CD

I hate the copy protection where it ties the software to a specific computer.

For example I would want to use Vegas to capture DV and print to tape from one computer, but I would like to actually edit on another.

The program would not be in use on more than one computer at a time.

I don't mind dongles for example because I can move my one copy around at will. But chaining the program to a single computer is terrible.

If I buy the CD version can I install the program without chaining it to a specific machine?

If no, is there a dongle option for Vegas?

Thx for your input!

If you buy the CD, you STILL need to download the updates from the internet to keep the most current version. When you install that update, you'll have to do the secondary internet registration. However, you CAN legally do that on both machines IF they will not both be used at the same time.

As another option, you might want to look at a program such as Scenalyzer Live to do your capturing.

What you want to do is possible with both the download version and the CD version. The Sony license agreement allows you to install Vegas on more than one computer provided you only use it from one computer at a time (e.g., laptop and desktop). The software will happily activate on more than one PC registered to you.

Also take note that registering and activating Vegas is exactly the same for both the download and the CD versions. The only real difference is that with the CD version your serial number comes printed on a postcard and with the download version your serial number is emailed to you. After that they're identical.

Do you have to call up and explain what you're doing each time or is it automated? (just register on one computer, then the other)

Thank you for your answers!

This forum is probably the best selling point of Vegas =)

It's totally automated UNLESS you try to do it a BUNCH of times.

Since I tend to reinstall Windows on a regular basis (much less frequently since XP, though), I've had to contact SF/Sony a couple of times to get my activation counter reset. They've always been great about it, and usually are back to me within a half hour when I go through their support site at www.custcenter.com.

The last time I did this, I was told that each product can be activated 12 times before the count needs to be reset.

They've always treated me fairly, and been very friendly about it. I have no problem with this kind of system, as long as the vendor doesn't fall into the trap of assuming that I am a criminal.
