Not Understanding Event FX....

prejto wrote on 10/23/2015, 1:35 AM
Sorry for another elementary question. I didn't have any issue with this in the first edition of Sonic Foundry's Vegas, but in VP13 I cannot see what tan FX is doing in preview.

For example if I load Event Pan/Crop I can immediately see the effect in Video Preview. However, if I add an additional FX (such as sharpen, or saturation, etc) I can clearly see it in the chain but cannot see any difference to the original video in preview when adjustments are made.

Thanks in advance for putting this in order!

Peter

Above the preview panel is a circle split with a vertical line. This allows yu to see the FX split screen or to by-pass it completely which is probably what has happened to you. Click it and see.

You might have FX Bypass activated. Check the 2-tone square with the black solid circle just to the left of the Preview Quality selection button above the preview window. Clicking on this button (the FX button that is) activates or deactivates FX in the preview window. The twisty immediately to the right of the FX button allows you to set some settings for the FX preview: FX in full screen, or just the left or right hand sides of the preview window so you can compare the original image with that image with the FX applied.

It appears he can see the effect of the first FX in the chain, but he can't see the effect of any subsequent FX. That would seem to preclude the possibility of the FX button in the preview window being turned off.

That being said, his example used the "Pan/Crop" effect. I don't know about later versions of Pro, but in 8.0c the "Pan/Crop" was separate from the other FX. So it could be that with the FX button turned off in the preview window, it will show Pan/Crop but not anything else. Someone with his version of Vegas will have to check on that.

I am reading this differently. I believe what he means is that he can see that the FXs have been applied when looking at the FX chain in the FX edit window but he cant see the FX effect in the preview window and that would conclude what others have already stated, the FX Bypass button is on.

Sorry to be slow to thank you all for your responses! I just returned from a trip abroad.

It was the button in the preview window that I wasn't familiar with. The button seems not to effect pan/crop in that I can see the effect regardless of the button selection. However, additional fx in the chain can be toggled to on or off. I wasn't able to see the effect of a split screen but I will keep experimenting.

Thanks again!

Pan/Crop isn't part of the effects chain.

Well not to beat a dead hors but..... it certainly looks like it's part of the effects chain! I don't think I can post a screen shot. However, when I load Pan/Crop first, followed by a video FX the FX shows up 2nd in the "chain" following Pan/Crop as seen in the window right above the word "Preset."

Hmmmm. Perhaps newer versions work differently. I'm currently using version 10, and in this version Pan/Crop and Track Motion are completely independent entities. They're not part of the chain, and are invoked separately from effects.

"Perhaps newer versions work differently."

All versions after 10 treat Pan/Crop as a unique property applied to the event on the timeline. If it is characterized as an effect at all, it is certainly a special case.

As do versions 2--9, which makes me wonder what Peter is seeing.

Peter, can you make a screen shot at all? You can't upload it to the forum, but if you post it in dropbox or any picture posting site you can then copy the link to it here. Or, you can email it to

and i'll post it for you.

In version 12, if I apply a Pan Crop and then open the Video Event FX to add another effect, the Pan Crop shows up and can be moved around like any other effect.

It is there but Pan/Crop is still not a Video Event FX in the traditional sense of the word and wont be affected by the Preview Window button.
Does it show up in the Video Event FX tab? No it doesn't, therefore it's not an effect.

that may be true, but it's position on the effects page affects the outcome of the video. so to me, that makes it part of the effects chain.

DonaldT, while technically it's a part of the FX chain, it isn't affected by the Preview Window Split Screen View settings which is what Peter (the OP) was led to believe.
