Notice for Betacam/Canopus ADVC-100 users

I recieved a letter from Canopus Tech support yesterday in response to my problems getting the ADVC-100 to output to my BETA recorder, and the ADVC-100 is in fact not compatible with BETAcam. Specifically:

"The ADVC-100 uses an internal sync which does not generate a strong enough subcarrier to lock onto a beta cam device properly. So this will result in odd color problem or even black and white video. The ADVC-100 was not designed to be used with Professional level devices."

The ADVC-500 is compatible with Betacam, but costs around six times the price of the advc-100.

Hope this saves somebody else some trouble.

I capture directly thru my Canopus ADVC-100 from Sony Betacam SP player
without any problems. But now I know if I ever have enough bread to purchase a recorder what to expect.

BetaSP recorders, particularly Ampex and BVW 50s are quite affordable on Ebay. However, if all you want is a player I suggest that J series unt that plays SP, SX, DigiBeta etc. Enables you to cover all bases.

Ironic, isn't it? I've hooked up a TV out on a video card to a Panasonic DVCPro deck with no problems, but your older Sony Betacam machine doesn't like your video signal. I guess "professional" changes meaning over the years. :) Another ironic thing is that the DVCPro record/playback decks cost about as much as a Betacam SP player. :) That's why we have 5 DVCPro decks at work and 1 BetaSP. Well, we didn't have the BetaSP player until last year. We're trying to phase out our 3/4" decks (that I hate).
