Now I'm Really Desperate!

Jon, I don't have external firewire hard drives. The only firewire device connected to the computer is the DSR-30, which is used for capture and PTT.

Yes, this has been an "adventure"!

Nick, I was forced to install SP2 when I installed a 320 GB hard drive. Under SP1, the drive capacity wasn't being recognized.

Brian, tried # 1, camera is recognized.

Haven't tried #2, no one close by with another system.

John, suggested #3, that and it did have some affect--now I can send a singal out to the external monitor.

#4, have a new card on the way.

I'm afraid #5 is inevitable and it's going to cost hundreds of dollars (it was something like $600 just to have the heads cleaned!).

Thanks, guys!

Ouch. Sounds like it's a bad/loose firewire port on the deck. You may want to shop around a bit for another price quote.

Why oh why do camera and deck makers use those flimsy 4-pin firewire jacks instead of those robust 6-pin ones? To keep their repair centers busy?

Jay,
It does sound like the deck, not the card. You should be able to do your editing right away using your camera as a firewire device. If you were planning to output to a large DV tape because of length you can temporarily split it into two projects and output to two mini Dv tapes. If the final product is VHS you can do the pause/Play/Record manual method to change tapes midstream.
Later you can transfer or print to large DV when you get the deck fixed.

Brian, I just spoke with the Sony service center in Teaneck, NJ. The cost of repair is $130 per hour pluse parts, if that's the problem. I'm in the wrong end of this business!

Hire or borrow a deck to test this out? - Dumb idea? - Grazie

Jay, there may be a local place that has Sony Certified techs to fix your deck at a lower cost, plus no freight. Check any large A/V dealers in your area.

Jay,
Before you bring it there, plug it into someone elses computer to test it......just to be sure.
I am assuming if you unplug the DV cable and then plug it back in, nothing happens to the mouse cursor. Also even if you have another computer with W98SE on it. Put the card in it and test the deck on that machine.

The one you mentioned in Teaneck is very good as is the one in PA.

The deck may be functioning perfectly. Please, before sending it off, try reverting to what is truly XPSP1 (you can get back to the OS state you are in now via a similar restore process).

I understand the negatives to doing this but I bet you will see the 30 working under SP1.

Sorry, but I tried that last week and it didn't work either (unless I did it incorrectly).
