NVidia 570 VP11 and VP13

Bottom line: VP13 can only reliably render on my Window 7 64 system with Preview Ram set to zero and it still renders somewhat slower than VP11.

After "upgrading" to VP13 from VP11 I've had lots of problems with GPU rendering which I've been trying to figure out and resolve. Currently I'm using version 384.89 of the NVidia drivers and Version 373 of VP13. I've gone through various exercises of removing all the drivers, all versions of Vegas and reinstalling piece by piece with no changes to the behavior.

Everything I have renders without problems using VP11 GPU rendering and relatively simple projects GPU render OK with VP13. However, with VP13, more complex projects crash at various places during renders, generally not at the same place in a given project. Again these all work perfectly with VP11.

After reading a bunch of posts I tried setting the Dynamic Ram Preview to 0 and it fixed the GPU rendering crashes with VP13, although it never was a problem with VP11. I also played with the Open CL memory filter, but it only made things slower.

VP11 Dynamic Ram 200 OpenCL Mem filter 0384 - 1:01 (hours:minutes)
VP11 Dynamic Ram 000 OpenCL Mem filter 1024 - 1:12
VP11 Dynamic Ram 000 OpenCL Mem filter 0384 - 1:11
VP13 Dynamic Ram 200 OpenCL Mem filter 0384 - Crash
VP13 Dynamic Ram 200 OpenCL Mem filter 1024 - Crash
VP13 Dynamic Ram 000 OpenCL Mem filter 0384 - 1:20
VP13 Dynamic Ram 000 OpenCL Mem filter 1024 - 1:42

I also tried stabilizing a 10 second hand held shot with smoothing and amount both set to 1.00 although setting them to the default .5 took the same time.

VP11 Dynamic Ram 200 OpenCL Mem filter 0384 - 17 sec - Poor Stabilization
VP11 Dynamic Ram 200 GPU Off - 19 sec - Poor Stabilization
VP13 Dynamic Ram 000 OpenCL Mem filter 0384 - 24 sec - Excellent
VP13 Dynamic Ram 000 GPU Off - 24 sec - Excellent
VP13 Dynamic Ram 200 GPU Off - 24 sec - Excellent

I had great success with my ASUS GTX570 in my previous P8Z68 i7-2600K, later 3770K and my current Intel DX79SR i7-3930K which I recently upgraded to 2x GTX580. However, there are only a few drivers I trust: 275.33, 296.10 and 334.89. 275.33 and 296.10 I used under VP11 and also 12. VP13 I currently use 296.10 but I also had 334.89 and 335.23. Just yesterday I had "too much time" on my hand and tried later drivers but with little success and specifically the current 340.52 doesn't work on my system. It produces slow render times and I also had two crashes I usually don't have at all. My DRAM is set at default 200 and the OpenCL filter is at 1024.

While that doesn't help you with your system, it shows how different systems can be and what works on one side fails on the other.

Unfortunately it seems the crashing is very project dependent. Some of my projects render fine (albeit slowly) on VP13 with the default settings while others crash every time. The ones that crash are larger and more complex so I'm not sure how a public set of test projects could be set up for people to try.

Added some new data on stabilization to the OP

Are you using any 3rd party plugins or just plain Vegas effects?

No 3rd party plugins. This is just a straight Vegas 13 install with nothing added and nothing added to the NVidia software either.

That is strange. I had great success on my systems with the GTX570 and to be honest, a single GTX580 is only at the most 10% faster. I even used it an old PC with a Q6600 and got great render times too; certainly no crashes.
