At some tasks, like ray tracing, they are saying as much as a 4x improvement over the 3090.

Systems:

Desktop

AMD Ryzen 7 1800x 8 core 16 thread at stock speed

64GB 3000mhz DDR4

Geforce RTX 3090

Windows 10

Laptop:

ASUS Zenbook Pro Duo 32GB (9980HK CPU, RTX 2060 GPU, dual 4K touch screens, main one OLED HDR)

Only by using DLSS 3 (and early reports suggest that introduces lag and visual artifacts )

And only for ridiculous prices. The price performance for the 40x0 series seems poor value. I'm a big nVidia fan, dating back to the GeForce 256, but this generation doesn't excite me at all.

MSRP is only $100 more than the 3090?

Even if it's only 2x the RT performance without DLSS (which on paper, it's supposed to be), that's still worth it in my book, though I don't bother using these cards for games (I prefer consoles for gaming)... I use them to ray trace animations. If I can turn a 6 hour render into a 3 hour one (or even a 4 hour one), worth the price for me.

Sure, but the 3090 itself was overpriced, being more than double the original MSRP of the 3080. That being said, I'm just a VFX dabbler. For professionals who spend a lot of time waiting for renders, the investment may be worth it. As the OP says, the Vegas performance figures will be interesting to see.

I got me a 3090 beginning of September when building my new PC. I knew 40 series where coming end of year, but I thought the time was ripe for getting a good price on 3090, not the mention the availability and related model/brand choice. Also, the 3090's on sale now, are mature in both material and software/drivers, something often overlooked if you are an early adopter.

I'm so tempted but can't really warrant the spend, my 3090 SUPRIM does fine generally, so I'll wait for the 5000 series to come out n get a 4000 cheap 😁

I might take the plunge, my power bill is begging no, but I do a lot of CGI, and that added firepower would be nice. 2x the ray tracing performance in VRAY over the 3090. But man is that thing huge, and power hungry.

@fr0sty watch this from around 14:40 , Can reduce input power by high amounts and get only a small reduction in performance. Good when power/heat is an issue. He is saying it's massively overclocked by default and runs inefficiently, although it's not hot or loud so up to the user what config they like.

I came across this 4090 / 3090 comparison from just a few hours ago. Looks good plus the street price comparatively reasonable as well
