Wahhhh.....

So, I’ve got the NVidia RTX3080.... Has been Burnt-In. Good oh!

Then I get an email this morning, ahem....

Your CPU has failed and needs to be replaced. As it is also under Warranty we will upgrade you. Removing Intel Core i9 9820x and replacing with Intel Core I9 10900X

oh my eye ..... Seems like this is a real good thing? Yes?

TheRhino wrote on 2/4/2021, 2:16 PM

Your CPU has failed and needs to be replaced,,, Seems like this is a real good thing? Yes?

Sounds strange that you have had BOTH the GPU & CPU fail in the same system... I hope they gave you a quality power supply otherwise you will have more issues in the future...

That said, the 10900X is faster than the 9820x which is no longer available... Around here the 10900X sells for $470 USD at MicroCenter so it's good you're not having to pay that out-of-pocket...

I've built all of my own Vegas workstations for the past 20 years & have never had a GPU or CPU fail so having both go in the SAME system is suspicious of something else, like a bad power supply, bad motherboard, or just a sloppy build... They have totally treated you right by taking care of everything, but that's just highly unusual to have 2 back-to-back failures in ONE system...

Thanks for your concern.

Indeed it is strange and has also said to me. Could be that with the new GPU their Stress Test pushed the CPU over the edge? PSU is a 1kw Corsair, so plenty of oomph and headroom. Going forward I do get further cover on all replaced parts.

@Grazie Well, thats the GPU 3000 series analysis vs 2000 series out the window, too many variables now with a new cpu. That is, the one for one comparison is gone.

Huh, that's a quality power supply, and stress-testing the CPU & GPU won't break them because most stuff these days just throttles down before it breaks...

In addition to doing part-time video editing I am a teacher in the US and get my vaccination Saturday morning... I hope it doesn't make me too tired because I've got some editing jobs to finish Saturday...

@TheRhino - I had mine at 10am today. By 4pm I was a little woozy, like having a mild hangover, without the fun part 😜. But now, 12 hours on, I’m fine 🙂. It’ll be different for different people AND the vaccine you’ve been given. Our NHS has been enormous with the response to all of this. As testament to our experiences back in March and April last year, I’m proud to be part of the Nation that created the NHS.

......anyway, “And now for something completely different”. Last night, Mrs G made this Mediterranean Vegetable Pie:

@Grazie Glad your builders stood behind their warranty... In 30 years of building my own high-end editing workstations, entire computer labs for schools & small offices, etc. I've never had a GPU, CPU, motherboard, and power supply all fail in one system... That's crazy!

I have actually built most of my own stuff using open box returns, etc. to save as much as possible & occasionally had to return stuff that didn't work... However, I always buy NEW power supplies, break them in on an old test system, check the voltages with a good meter, and give 'em a good smell test... I was building PC's during the "capacitor plague" (early 2000's) so I learned to check 'em...

I don't see much camera gear that would use AV1 as acquisition format..

Maybe. DaVinci Resolve must think there’s something to it though as it’s now added to their latest build.

I.e. Support for decoding AV1 clips on Windows. Accelerated AV1 decodes on supported Intel, NVIDIA and AMD platforms.
