Odd avi flaring after transitions and no jpeg import

Two issues. Running VF2 (with same problem with VF1) on new Sony Vaio with Windows ME (hehe:)). All AVI files that are rendered have a sudden (obnoxious) increase in brightness immediately AFTER any transition ends. So in a simple cross fade, the video does the fade, then right after it is done, you see a sudden brighter image then it goes back to normal lighting. This does not happen with MPEG, RM, MOV or other types, just windows avi files. Also, on my other PC with my second (registered) copy of VF1, it never happens. (This PC is running Win 98SE). Any clues how to fix this? Any other Vaio users notice this problem. It does occur on exported tapes as well.

2nd issue: Why can't we import JPEG's into VF2 like we could in VF1? Most digital photos are in jpeg, so why do we have to convert them to GIFs to get them in the videos?

On problem #1 about the brightness - if you save a project file on your sony and copy it over to your 2nd pc, does that project experience the same problem? If you render to an avi and then play it on the 2nd pc, how does that work?

Regarding problem #2 - I've never had a problem using jpg files in vf2. Don't know if the mpg addin had anything to do with jpg, but since you talk of rendering to mpg, you must have it installed anyway.
Do the files not show up in the media window? Or do they not open? I've had a few downloaded photos that don't open - say they have an invalid header - but I can open in Corel and resave as jpg and open.

Have you installed Directx8?

Yes, I had loaded DX8 prior to installing the software. It does seem to be an effect of the rendering process since the "flare" is only visible after the captured avi's are rendered. In the preview before rendering there is no such flare effect. Since it occurs a few milliseconds after the end of each transition, software may be trying to equalize the lighting or something.

I could send you a small segment if that would help. (very small since those AVI's are big buggers).
