I just upgraded to windows xp from 98 2nd edition.In the past if I found a picture i liked on the web I could right click and save to my pictures, but now when I do this it saves it but when I go to open it says no preview. I m sorry to ask such a question but You people are the best with my off the wall problems. I use these pics sometimes for videos.

It's not clear where you're not able to preview the photo, but--

One nice feature in XP is that you can browze to the folder where the photo is in Explorer and set the folder options (There's a drop-down icon right on the tool bar at the top of the window) to "Preview." You can then see thumbnails of every photo in the folder!

Likewise, the Media Pool in Screenblast can be set to show you thumbnails of every photo in the pool also.

This happened to me when I upgraded my IE once. For me, it started saving .jpg files as .jpe which wasn't configured as a valid file extension. I'm not sure how to change IE back to defaulting to the .jpg extension, but you can go into your file types and set .jpe to the same settings as .jpg and be able to view them again.

You should be able to check if this is what your problem is, by right clicking on a graphic and checking to see if it is trying to save it with the .jpe extension. Further, if your cache has been lowered to a very low level, it will try to save the images as .bmp because they are no longer in the cache when you try to save them. If it tries to default to a .bmp on saving, just increase your cache size.

it saves photo but when I click on it the picture will not open.The properties say that it is a jpeg

Quick and dirty solution: change the file name extension from .jpeg to .jpg

To do that, you'll have to be able to view file extensions, which is not always enabled, so if it isn't, in Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer), choose Tools>Options, select the View tab and UNcheck "hide extensions for known file types."

Actually, while you're there, you may as well select the next tab over, File Types, and go into that to select which program you want to use to open which file types, e.g., ".jpg", ".jpeg", "jpe" etc., for a more longterm solution to your problem. I believe the default program in XP for those file types is Windows Picture and Fax Viewer.

"If it tries to default to a .bmp on saving, just increase your cache size." - or in IE, choose Tools, Internet Options, General, and under Temporary Internet files, click on Delete Files... You'll be able to go back to saving pictures as .jpgs, .gifs or whatever.

I tried all this but it did not work.When I right click on a picture it gives me two options to save as art and bmp. I'm able to save as background for desktop and it shows it as saved as a jpg but when I click on it it will not open and just says no preview.

Are you able to view the jpeg in an imaging prog like photoshop or PhotoImpact?

Also have you any yellows in device manager?
