Jsnkc,

Hey, if you're in Madison, perhaps you could run over to the office building that houses the Sony Vegas team, take a picture of it and post it somewhere where we can see it. I'm just curious what the "head office" for our beloved Vegas looks like.

Probably they guys look something like this. If or not they work in a hollow tree I don't know.

John, here's what it looks like from space.

Click on "1617 Sherman Ave" link, then click on the "Satellite" link in the upper right-hand of the page and zoom in on the image.

I suspect one or more Sony programmers are chained to their computer until they fix version six bugs like the guy in the picture. <wink>

-who out there is a full time editor/vegas user? Well, I'm self-employed, and I do video post for free lance producers. But my primary work is 3D modeling / animation, for which I use Vegas for compositing and exporting to streaming formats. And, I also do IT work and websites...

-what is your job exactly? See number one

-how long have you been doing it? I started working in the television industry in 1975 and I have been free lance for about 15 years. First editing system, when I went out on my own, was a video toaster with S-Vhs industrial gear, then to Speed Razor on a DEC Alpha Raptor(a true 64bit processor WAY before 64bit was "the latest thing" ;-), then Vegas starting at version 3.

-what do you make a year? Well, that's tough to answer in that most of my income is from the 3D work and the Vegas / NLE work is only about 25% of the total.

-where are you from? From Louisiana and still in Louisiana ;-)

-who out there is a full time editor/vegas user? (your full time job) Self-employed full-time doing mostly corporate, a few TV commercials and wanting to get into music videos but recently moved and bustin' my balls trying to get established (I'll be paying almost $300 per month for phone book ads when they're all delivered). As I write this I'm dubbing VHS copies for cheap (but happy to have something)

-what is your job exactly? videographer/editor

-how long have you been doing it? 2 years

-what do you make a year? (you dont have to answer this one if you dont want....) I was making a little over $30 K before I moved...at the moment I'm at poverty level : )

-where are you from? I was working in the podunk area of Portales and Clovis New Mexico (population of 52,000) I'm now in Las Cruces, NM (42 miles north of El Paso TX and Mexico) with a population of about 600,000 (not counting Mexico) in a 50 mile radius so I am very encouraged (or at least hopeful)
I was a working musician most of my working life. Although no one asks me for my autograph, I truly love my "new" line of work and feel like it is the only substitute for being the rock star I was going to become : )
If you're asking these questions because you're unsure if you're making the right career move I would definitely say don't do it unless you love it...FWIW

-who out there is a full time editor/vegas user? (your full time job)
I'm semi-retired. I spend most of my free time editing photos and producing videos, mostly for the community and local schools.

-what is your job exactly?
I used to be a software entrepreneur, and ran three different software companies. I then was a "startup consultant" for ten years. For various reasons, I retired early. I haven't seen anything interesting enough (especially since the "crash" in March 2000) to get me out of retirement, but if Sony asked me to run their video software division, I'd do it.

-how long have you been doing it?
Video editing: five years. Photo editing: a decade. Computer graphics and imaging: twenty years.

-what do you make a year? (you dont have to answer this one if you dont want....)
I have only charged for one project since I started. A job for the NSA, believe it or not. And guess what, I could tell you what I charged but then they'd make me kill you. (I think the NSA invented that old joke, but then again, we'll never know).

-where are you from?
I'm from Chicago, but I think you are asking where I live now. Carmel, CA.

I am a full time writer/director/cameraman and editor - not all on the same day though -

I use Vegas fulltime for my editing, and I love it - there is an old AVID MC9000 (cost me $120,000) sitting out in my garage.

I have been a professional since 1962 and have never had a "real" job - this is all that I do or have ever done - except...
it's nothing like what it once was.
You are a young man - get used to the idea that you will be re-learning your career for the rest of your life.

At the height of my career my day rate to shoot and direct was $10,000 a day... today I can be gotten for less (you need enormous machinery behind you to get that kind of fee, and once I left Manhanttan, that door closed).
