Old 720x480 home videos to DVDA Blu-Ray ... does it make sense?

Hoping someone can set me straight on what to do with my 720x480 home videos. Back in the day, I rendered them in Vegas then to DVDA. But, I must say, they look a bit sickly on my HDTV - including the DVDA menus. So I thought why not update my collection to pristine HD! I mean ESPN does it.

I began the process in Vegas of "zooming in" to 16:9 and then rendering up to 1920x1080 60i. That was the standard template that did not require DVDA re-optimization, but wow, this is taking a lot of effort and time. I am really wondering, is this the right process? Is there something a bit more simple that will result in some improved quality without having to do these steps?

Any feedback would be highly appreciated! Thank you kindly.

Most TVs and disc players do a pretty good job of upscaling your DVDs, and their results will likely look better than what you'll get blowing up your videos to four times their original resolution. I wouldn't just add fuzzy pixels, as you're doing.

ESPN is using some pretty sophisticated software and a tool called Edge Enhancement -- but even that isn't producing true high-def. You're not likely to get the same results just enlarging the picture.
