Old 8mm tapes

With lots of 8mm analogue tapes which I should be editing and archiving I wonder if there are any ideas on copying tapes which may be starting to break up.I have thought of buying one of the now very cheap ($299 in Australia) analog 8mm cams (Samsung is one brand) to play the tapes through the digi-8. Does this make sense, I dont want to wear out the digital till I'm ready for a new cam. How good are these cheapies for playback?

Not sure it this helps but this is what I did.

I have tons of 8mm tapes (some about 14 years old) and I own a Sony Digital 8, that I used both for filming non-serious events and doing transfers (to aiv then DVD burn).
The cam holds up very well and once in a while I throw in a tape cleaner. I must have transfered about 30 tapes in the last 6 months and the cam holds up well. For $299 you can't go wrong.
