OMF import and Stereo

I've posted a question on this topic before and asked Spot at the VASST training day last week but the answers I've received on the forum have indicated that this problem isn't easily fixed and Spots answer at the forum I can't get to work.
I think it was probably becuase I didn't explain the problem clearly so I'll try again.

When exporting an OMF from any editing system or DAW all audio tracks are treated as mono. The stereo tracks are split into their component left and right tracks and appear as two separate tracks.

If I import an OMF into a program like ProTools I can drag the subsequent two mono tracks onto a stereo track and they behave, edit and playback as stereo.

In Vegas I get the mono tracks but can't combine them onto one track as stereo without going through a render process. If I do render them I lose any volume information that related to the tracks from the OMF, or worse render the volume curve into the audio.

I can group the tracks but I then end up with two faders on my Mackie mixer for what should be one stereo track.

Is there any elegant work around for this problem?

Stephen Hope

Try grouping the tracks. Not events-- the tracks.. I think I did this by mistake once.

Open the left trk. in sound forge, convert the file to stereo and overwrite the right trk. from the right trk. mono file.

Yeah, Vegas should have full OMF support... & full BWF for that matter, but Sony Media seems no longer interested supporting professional audio users. I wouldn't be surprised if Sound Forge and CDA are discontinued all together.
Many are turning to other apps.

Hi there Steve,

I had a bit of time to ponder this problem this afternoon. One of our regular jobs continually forces us to face this problem and so I thought have another go but I can't think of any way round it.

All I think we can do is suggest to Sony that they incorporate the Pro-Tools ability into Vegas, but I think we would be pretty low on that list.

I'm only using V5 but was wondering how the AAFs work in 6. Any improvement?

It seems to solve the stereo problem but creates so many more, if it works at all. The only AAF transfer I've managed to get to work is out of Vegas back into itself. Yes I did get real interleaved stereo but that's about all.
You don't get volume info and from some of the other earllier posts it appears that compatibility between various systems is NOT great.
No one I know is using it professionally even though ProTools can import and export it. Still sticking with OMF 2.
That's basically why I'd like to get the OMF and Stereo bug fixed.
