You better contact customer service on this one.
I'm not sure you can do this if you used 4.0 to get a reduced price for 5.0. You might be able to sell it, but the buyer might not be able to use it to get a discounted upgrade price should he/she decide to upgrade to 5.0.
Again, call CS, since you definitely want the exact scoop on this before you sell it to someone.

Hi Andy. This has been discussed before in the forums, and the reply from Sony was that it is OK to sell your old version. The buyer will be able to register it with Sony, but will not be able to use that serial number for any further software upgrades. It sounds very reasonable to me.

This certainly sounds way more reasonable than it should be.

If you are upgrading from version 4 to version 5 by buying a software upgrade at a discounted price instead of buying a full version, your new version is contingent on you still having your old version and you should not sell. The new license for the new version is the combination of your previous license and the upgrade license.

If Sony handles it differently (as someone pointed it out) it is certainly not the industry standard and certainly sounds weird to me.

That's the way they do it. The only catch is that the one you sold can NOT be used for any upgrade offer. They have that s/n on file so you can't lie to them eigther. :)

I don't think I have seen an "upgrade license" for Vegas. It seems that when you upgrade to V5 you actually get a full license, and there is nothing mentioned in that about having to retain previous versions.

Maybe Sony have a good marketing reason for wanting to get their products used by as many people as possible? Seems to me they will make new sales eventually if at least some of the people who bought the old version decide to buy the latest one. Anyway, I take back what I said about it being a very "reasonable" offer. I should have said very "generous"!

I don't think I've ever heard of a company doing that before. Oh well, I guess I can put my copies of Vegas 3 and 4 up on Ebay then :)

I did exactly what you are planning to do. It worked out great. Once I sold Vegas 4.0 and DVDA I contacted Sony and gave them the name, address and phone number of the buyer. They indicated this would allow him to register the product with them. And, he would not be able to use the product to upgrade. But, it was a very simple process. Of course, the product has to be removed from any of your computers before selling.
