One problem with Windows 10 we didn't think about

Windows 10 automatically updates, whether you want it to or not. May not seem like a big issue, but as some have discovered, some Videocard drivers work better than others. Well, windows 10 will always ensure you have the latest video card drivers. ouch

There is a kind of fix.
This will allow you to hide certain updates.

I just discovered there is also a way to turn off Device Updates. Go to the Control Panel and type Device Install in the search box.
Select change device installation settings.

Good info.. I am one to leave driver updates alone, unless I am having an issue that the driver addresses...

I have determined that my video system will remain on Windows 7 for the foreseeable future.

Edit:

My video system had very poor playback and would stop halfway through a render as well as other problems. I went back to an earlier driver and all was good again.

Maybe Nvidia doesn't do this but I had to manually say I'd install an AMD GPU driver.

That's not good. I have never ever had Windows install a video card driver from auto update that ever installed properly in any Windows operating system.

When I updated to Windows 10 it wasn’t to bad for a week or so, I had to do some reinstallations and update a few registry entries.

But then the first update came from Microsoft that included a graphic card update and everything changed, I had several issues with Windows 10 but I could not render like I used to. I could normally render three HD videos at the same time on my system but after the update it struggled and just stopped around 70% each time. Rendering one would normally finish.

After much stress I decided to use the 30 day roll back button to go back to Windows 7 and guess what, it didn’t work, blue screen of death was back on every re-boot. With no option a clean install of Windows 7 was needed. A pain in the middle of the wedding season with a back log of several weddings to finish but at least know, a clean set up has given me a good reliable and faster system.

In my opinion, stay well alone of Windows 10 until the support stops for Windows 7, which is extended support to 14 January 2020. Don’t fix what’s not broken!

I completely agree and am staying with Win 7 as well. I see nothing but disadvantages with Win 10.

Yep, I flagged this up in this earlier thread: http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/forums/showmessage.asp?messageid=925879

I like Win 10...but it's staying on my laptop. Unless a fix for turning off updates completely arrives.

I have Win 10 on two my three computers and I actually like it very well. It boots extremely fast, seems to recover from errors well. It does crash or lock randomly and I get the sense I don't have as much control of what goes on behind the scenes. That being said, I am staying on Win 7 for my video editing computer because I don't like the idea of not being able to control updates. Once an update crashes something, you have to first figure out what actually happened and then roll back. Well once you roll back, it will just try to update again at its next convenience. I have a feelling they will get enough complaints about this that it will be addressed in... wait for it... an update!!!

I hated Windows 8, was not impressed with 8.1 but 10 seems pretty good and faster too. As for automatic updates, this tweak works well.

Hmmm....I have win 8.1 and win 7 on a dual boot. Would Win 10 install over win 7 (which is the primary/first install) without affecting 8.1 I wonder? Then if I have problems I can just reboot into 8.1.
