open 4k MP4 files for editing

crazyapple wrote on 2/9/2017, 2:49 PM

Hi,

I've been using movie studio platinum for HD videos without any problems. Everything works fine - editing, rendering. I'm planning to buy GH4/GH5, so wanted to make sure 4K footage works fine with movie studio as well. I've downloaded 4k sample footage, which plays fine on vlc player as well as Media Player Classic HC (which comes with K lite codec pack). When I try to import this MP4 clip on my project, it is only displayed as a green screen. I presume this means vegas movie studio doesn't understand how to process this file.

My Windows Media Player can open this file, but it only plays audio, not video.

Not sure what I'm missing here. My desktop is quite powerful (intel i7 4790, nvidia GeForce GTX 960, win 10, 16gb RAM etc.), so that shouldn't be a problem. The file plays fine on VLC player as well as MPC HC, so my machine should have required codec as well.

I'm using Movie Studio Platinum 13.

Can anyone suggest what I might be missing please?

What version of Moviestudio do you use? I have no problems with 4k mp4 footage from my Panasonic FZ300 with Moviestudio 13. My desktop has almost the same specs as yours.

Aaah, should have mentioned in the original post. I'm using Movie Studio Platinum 13.

Never use Codec Packs in combination with a good edit program.
Most of the time those codecs replace the good Vegas ones.

Oh, ok. I just downloaded k lite codec pack today, as vegas couldn't handle mp4 files. I can uninstall, but I don't think that would help as the file was behaving exactly the same before I installed codec pack :(

If this helps, this is what the video properties show in movie studio. It does recognise it as Sony AVC, just can't play the video.

I usually use 25p frame rate, but I can remember that I also had some problems when I recorded 24p once.

Hmm... I tried opening 30p footage as well, same issue. Mediainfo of the 24p file is:

I just downloaded another 4k sample from here, which is opening fine in vegas 13. After comparing the two, I realised that the working file is 8 bit. The one not working is 10 bit. Seems as if Sony AVC codec isn't able to process the 10 bit MP4 file.

crazyapple wrote on 2/11/2017, 9:48 AM

So, anyone has any idea what can be done so that we can edit 10 bit 4k video in Vegas studio?

3POINT wrote on 2/11/2017, 3:33 PM

I'm afraid that's not possible with Vegas Movie Studio, try Vegas Pro.

crazyapple wrote on 2/11/2017, 4:51 PM

Hmmm... Pro is quite costly for what I do in terms of editing :( around £330... Is there no other way?

crazyapple wrote on 2/11/2017, 4:52 PM

Plus, Cornico mentioned earlier that even Vegas Pro 14 is not able to play the 10 bit file, so there is no guaranty that even Pro would work, isn't it?

3POINT wrote on 2/11/2017, 4:57 PM

I said try VegasPro, not buy VegasPro. Where can I download a sample of of the GH4/GH5?

Aaah, sorry for misunderstanding :)
