Operating systems

I am very happy with my current operating system which is Windows 2000. Avid's Xpress DV have recently updated their software but can now only be used with XP not 2000. Where as the earlier version could be used with 2000 but not XP. Sensible VV can be used with any. I only hope that if/when a new version is launched those rules will still apply.

There's a die-hard core of us out there still using 98SE, ME, and 2000. I'm sure SonicFoundry has no desire to alienate a large portion of it's user base over OS issues. One thing that a lot of software companies forget is that good ol' Windows 3.11 is capable of doing everything that you see happening on XP. It's just that in the old days, the application developer had to add all the features that the OS was lacking (hey, in the end, it's all just software code, wherever it comes from). True, it is nice to depend on a common set of features built into the newer OSes, but SonicFoundry seems very good at making the best use possible out of what's available in a wide range of Windows versions.

Another thing to keep in mind is that when Avid ups the OS bar on their $1500 (is that what it lists for these days?) software, then upgrading a $200 OS isn't a major issue in comparison. It's a little tougher to expect people to happily spend that much money on an OS upgrade when the software they're using is less than 1/3 Avid's price.

I second that. I have *a lot* of Software lying in corners of my machine (I have 220 GB) and my old faithful is still Win98-2. Universal and dependable.
I can't use AVID. I can't use Maya. So, what else ?

I had a go with WinMe and backed up in disgust ...
I use Win2k/NT at the office, but it is *really* not necessary at home.
I may switch to XP in the near future, but I will keep my faith in 98 until I am convinced.
My most precious piece of code is Boot Magic and Partition Magic. I can boot to different partitions using different Operating Systems.
Right now I can boot to Win98-2 , WinMe (urgh!) , OS/2 (don't ask) and DOS (yes!).
But XP will use the Me space sooner or later.

Ah ! yes, almost forgotten... Linux, MacOS and BeOS ... not for me, thanks.
