Optimize Disc

When you use the Optimize disc feature, is it re-encoding the MPEG file the same as if you dragged it into Vegas and then did Render As.. to an MPEG file with a lower rate? Or does it somehow scale the MPEG data without bonafide recompression. I've seen claims of other software to be able to do this.

DVDA re-encodes. I generally don't mess with the bitrates in the Optimize window unless I'm working with an AVI, which is going to get compressed anyhow. When working with MPEGs, it's best just to get the bitrate right before you bring it into DVDA.

Although maybe not all, most of the programs that claim to work with MPEGs without recompression are just joining / splitting files. They copy the bits that aren't changed and fiddle (slightly recompress) where the join / splits are.

I'm not sure what programs like DVD Shrink do. Black magic, I assume.

Your question is very similar to the one I posted just before yours.
If I have an mpeg2 that is too large, and the Optimize function brings up the bitrate slider, how do I know when the project is Opimized if the slider doesn't change the %? Thanks for any help. Bob K.

If your MPEG files are too large, prepare the project and then use DVD Shrink (free program) to reduce the whole thing. Best bet of all, of course, is to go back to Vegas and re-do the MPEG-2 at a lower bitrate. Use a bitrate calculator to determine the correct bitrate beforehand.
