Thanks for replying busterkeaton. Sorry for the lack of info.
What I am asking is - when editing scenes in separate files then bringing them together in one large project of nested scenes, is it somehow better to just nest the video of each scene and lay in the audio tracks in the large project rather than at the scene-file level?
I think I understand where you are coming from. When importing a veg, that is what a nest is (actually, it is a proxy file of the "imported" veg), an audio track of that nest comes with it. Now, are you asking what you can DO with that audio? Hence your comment about: "is it somehow better to just nest the video of each scene and lay in the audio tracks in the large project rather than at the scene-file level?" - well you have no choice. The audio comes in, in one stream. Now, of course, you/i/we can then right click ON that veg/nest and we can then "edit" within a secondary veg project the nest. But editing the audio of a nest WHILE within the TOP level project, other than dealing with it as just a single audio stream as any OTHER Event, the answer is no. so you don't HAVE the option to edit the audio from a nest. Now, IF you are asking if you can lay down audio tracks related TO the nest in the top level project while IN the top level project then sure. But you would have NO sync to the original nested video events and it would be like separate and un-synch un-group Video and Audio Events. I could see the opportunity for a majorly creation of mish-mash! But yes one COULD do it. Now, and maybe, this is one for the Scripting GIANTS amongst us and that is to proved synching of cross veg projects. Now THAT would be impressive!
Personally, I import the veg-nest, deal with the items either within the top level project OR edit the veg-nest within its own "instance" of Vegas.
However, you HAVE raised a question that potentially do have some gigantic creative possibilities!!!! Think about being able to audio mix the multi-track Nest-Audio while within the top veg?
You have an idea of WHAT you want to do? You want to share exactly what you are proposing?
A project I'm working on is an 8mm film from 1970 of the aircraft carrier I used to be stationed aboard. For this film, I've added not only music but 32 tracks of sound effects (jets launched/landing etc). I have each effect on it's own track because for me, it's easier to sync to the video/adjust volume etc that way.
Now, I want to add a voice over so I bring in this saved project veg file into a new instance of Vegas and it "merges" all those audio tracks into a single stereo sound track. This makes it easy to drop the volume of all those music and sound effect tracks at the same time where I want to place narration. Once the narration is in, this becomes my main project veg file and I then render out from this.
I'd find it easier to use fewer tracks, perhaps even just one or two tracks for all the sound effects. Turning off ripple edits while aligning a sound clip would probably help you a lot as this would avoid other events from being moved around.
Use an alternate track below the sound effects while initially placing the next sound effect. After syncing it press "8" on the numeric keypad to move it up into the main sound effects track. If you need to tweak press "2" to move that one clip back down to it's own track, then "8" to move it back afterwards. This avoids having anything else on the same track while syncing yet keeps all of the clips on one track the rest of the time.
Keep everything the way you have it now, but route all the sound effects tracks to a buss. Use the buss control to adjust the volume of all of them at once.
Thanks so much for the alternate methods of syncing multiple sound effects...so much to learn. I even need to learn how to do a "buss route".
I'll have to start a new topic on ways to deal with a fim like this sent to me on DVD made up of many short clips on one track with large differences in exposure and how to best adjust color, etc.
Thanks to everybody for all the informative replies - I have a long way to go on the learning curve for Vegas but theis bhoard is a major help. Thanks again!
Grazie: I think you're giving me too much credit, but thanks anyway!
My concerns are items like music that might "bridge" scenes (nests)and transitions - being an overarching part that includes each nest. I understand that I can just include the bridging music in a nest then drag the next scene (nest) over it, but what you suggest is very interesting.
Chienworks: When routing nested audio to a buss, is that buss available in the Master project (top level)? That would really be great to facilitate the use of, and consistency of, Voice/SFX/Music envelopes!
