Original Time Code in the clips

Videojohn wrote on 9/27/2006, 5:04 AM
Good Morning,

I have two questions

1) I would like to know if it is possible to view the original timecode of the clips captured when a clip is in the time line.
2) How do you activate the name of the clips (tape name and clip name) when a clip is in the timeline (I knew how to do it with Vegas 5 - in Tools, preferences - but I don't find it in Vegas 6.

Thank you
VideoJohn

1) Apply the timecode FX to the clip in the media pool, not the timeline.
2) View > Active Take Information.

"1) Apply the timecode FX to the clip in the media pool, not the timeline."

I think he means the ACTUAL tape timecode.. not generated media of timecode....

No u cant.. not on teh timeline.. teh only to preview THAT is within a firewire preview...

Ive mentioned this in my "what i want in vegas " thread..

That's why I said to apply the timecode FX to the clip in the media pool. This way you get the ACTUAL (i.e. original) tape timecode.

You can also use the Add Timecode to All Media script that ships with Vegas.
And as Mike indicates, adding in the media pool shows the original/tape T/C, not the Vegas generated T/C.

Under View enable Active Take Information.
That'll give you the event name and take information, on the timeline

Under Options>Prefernces>Video>Show Source Frame Numbers on Event Thumbnails. Select Timecode

This will display source timecode in the thumbnails on the T/L

All the above advice will give you burnt in timecode, i.e. it'll be there in your rendered video, not what you want I think.

Good point, Bob. I think that we're always caught up in the world of thinking folks wanna see a T/C dub vs actually viewing it in the timeline. This gets asked a lot, but more related to the dub vs just simply being able to reference it.

What'd be really usefull is an FX that burns in the active take name.
When I send out preview copies having to add generated text to every event can be a right PIA.

There's some VCRs that burn in the data from the tapes with chips but that means having to ingest twice and switch source files and render.

It'b be a big plus I think to have this for the serious hitters, seeing Camera 1 Reel 3, gosh the option for the whole metadata thing would be great.
