OT - 2/3" vs Canon5d2

Here's an interesting twist -
DP Graeme Beck has mashed a Sony BetaCam with the 5d to provide full sized sensor with Camcorder mobility and facility.

I can't comment on how well it all actually works, but you MUST see the comparison video he made to demo the difference between 2/3" and full sized sensors.

Scroll down to mid-page and play the video demo.
I rest my case.

Just for convenience, this is a clickable link. Yes, looking very interesting. Of course the 5D frame is twice that of 35mm cine, as in Vistavision. Certainly cuts the ground out underneath those "DOF attachments" , both in terms of performance and convenience.

Bah, 35mm sensors are so last decade. You can't make a movie unless you're using 65mm sensors this decade..

Argh, hang on, Avatar grossed 2.46 BILLION dollars as of today and it was shot on 2/3" cameras. Cancel the Epic for my next epic. Buy another PMW 350 and get out the Dremel tool. Man that was close.

Two weeks ago I saw some pretty "interesting" 3D shot by a mate of mine on two Sony Webbie thingies mounted on his home made mirror rig. I say interesting because getting the two zooms to track was impossible so I had model steam trains coming out of the screen into my face one second and I was going cross eyed the next. Still it was fun and with some more work could be quite practical and dirt cheap.

Bob,

3D? That's nothing. Vic is talking about 5D!

3D production is much more demanding than just hanging two cameras side by side.

The distance between the cameras is changed on a per scene basis, and the cameras also have to be angled depending on the distance to the subject, and on top of that serious production planning is needed to think about where things should go in the frame to avoid making the viewers sick.

5D, that's old news, Canon now has 7D :)

All joking aside Mauro Fiore's comments in the ASC mag are an interesting read. He found shooting with such a large DOF a challenge, he went back to the original way of drawing the eye where it was wanted using lighting and color.
Indeed some scenes were shot with an interaxial of only a few millimeters, I don't know how that's done on the Fusion cameras.
