OT - a veiled peek into the future

Although this article is primarily about the convergence of still and motion digital acquisition... I still see the words 300fps in the article.

Plus high resolution imagery at 60fps.

What a wonderful time we are experiencing to be alive and immersed in this art form.

hey v, talk for yourself ;-}

What a wonderful time we are experiencing to be alive and immersed in this art form.

you got bottomless pockets, a full head of hair, and a weird sense of adventure?

yes, i love the pics, the simplicity of nle, but why don't i ever seem to have enough time to really come to grips with the technology, etc., before it's obsolete and we're already talking about the next best thing to sliced bread?

the only problem with being on the cutting edge is that you have a tendancy to bleed to death very quickly...

Nuther one here.
Nothing will equal the thrill I got as a twelve year old, sixty odd years ago watching the images show up under the red safelight as I see-sawed my first verichrome film through the developer!!!!

I like technology too (:-)

boys - boys - boys -

just get off the train at any stop you like -

nobody's FORCING you to upgrade -

I did great work (and got well paid for it) with Vegas version 3 on a Windows 98 laptop. Both units are still running quite nicely.

HEY! quit yer bitchin' - (it's not becoming to a gentleman of your age!)

on the other hand... whoopee

(smiles and yuks... please... smiles and yuks)

But! email me your ground address and I will ship you a beautiful "Milt Associates Ltd" cup (circa 1985) with the clearly inscribed "Bleeding on the Cutting Edge" - our logo waaayyyyy back in the old on-line tape to tape days. (That's when we REALLY knew how to spend money!)
This offer limited to the two crabby old timers above, please.

thanks for the offer v, but i'm afraid the p&p to australia might affect you're bottom line ;-)

of course i'm being FORCED into upgrading - there's this little voice that keeps telling me 'it'll be easier, faster, better, and it's only $......'

like you, upgrading equipment in the good old bad days was EXPENSIVE, and we really did have to. but at least it wasn't every six months. and relatively today, the costs are around replacing the head on a beta sp deck... so, i do listen to that little devil.

and DONT YOU DARE TELL ME TO STOP BITCHING!!! i'll have you know i've been in training for the last 60 years (almost), and if i can't bitch about something, then i feel as if i'm slipping.

all the very best

I know him well...
that little devil on my shoulder...

(whisper) upgraaaddeee... you know you want to...

and about that bitching... awww... I had thought you were just a VERY talented amateur!!

I had NO IDEA I was in the company of a highly trained athelete!
MILT: (turning to ushere) Sir... I bow to your clear expertise in this arena.

(He turns - first his head - then his body, which seems to have shrunken, somehow... and leaves the stage - a broken bitcher... clearly a man - all bled out - on the bleeding edge.)

:>))

This is the chip that forces us all to place motion sickness warnings on our videos?

Cool, I need a few of those. I may not be able to watch the footage, but I can sure sell it!

I've frequently put the trusty VX2000 into its 15fps "progressive mode" to capture stills that would be used only in video slideshows. Worked like a charm in autofocus - 900 stills per minute. Even a sufficiently talented fool like me can get a few good stills out of that stream.

Then I picked up an A1U and thought it would be a great source for higher quality stills and I could get 1800 per minute. Oops, the autofocus is not as robust, and the low light capabilities are modest. Guess I'm at the lower end of the learning curve, (and the HDV $$ range), but at this point the old SD camcorder is a better still image source....

Point is, that unless there is a really good focus capability, a high pixel count doesn't assure good images, at least when it is impractical to try manual focus.

arise sir milt, most gracious of correspondents.

let it be known far and wide in all the countries of the planet, that from this day forth, all those hearing voices in their head, (specifically saying; upgrade, NOT kill the bastards), will forever more require an extension on their visa card,

AND

let us not forget those left behind; the luckless wives, forced to make do with last years shoes and 3 year old washing machines, for they too suffer the word, and the word was UPGRADE.

and also,

let us not forget those whose equipment is smaller than ours, for they shall ever be in debt to the spin doctors of UPGRADE, for they shall crave their next door neighbours camera, his lighting kit, his BIGGER hard drive, his even BIGGER processor, and not to mention his HD monitor.

and when the second coming comes, and the day of judgement arrives, yea shall all capture the events upon your 3D, 2k wristwatch cameras.

for the lord of upgrade is a jealousy being, whose every whim and foible is to be measured in gigabytes per second, and those that spurn him shall be made to rot in the land of vhs, betamax, and blu-ray / hd dvd (strike out which not applicable).

here endeth the first lesson

amen

So now read out from the sensor isn't the factor limiting resolution/frame rate. Good thing that the cost of flash memory is dropping quickly. And we thought HDV made great demands on processing power; great news for the intensive air conditioning industry.

EDIT: when I was buying my EOS 5D I got the slightly different spin that soon there would be no need for video cameras because still cameras would take 10Mp at 24 fps.
