OT : about audio reseller in NY... ?the best?

FuTz wrote on 5/23/2005, 5:24 AM
Probably heading to NY next month.
Now, I know about B&H but one guy at this store mentionned a name when I went there 2 years ago about a pro audio reseller nearby in Manhattan (I was asking him about mixers, mics, etc.... and he probably got "fed up" so gave me that store name but "couldn't remember" the exact adress...)
I did a search on the net and found about Professionnal Sound Services but I'm really not sure it was the place he told me about. If my memory is good, he told "34th st." or something around...
I'd like to find the "B&H of Audio" in NY , or kind of... ?o_o?

(Yes, I know B&H got lots of audio equipment now on their shelves but, still, I'd like to know about that other store...)

Any of you have an idea?

Professional Sound Services is excellent---although they don't stock lots, they can get anything and the guys who run it are seasoned pros who have even created some of their own products (their shock mount for the ME66 is awesome) You can rent pretty much anything you want there and they treat you very well.

wow, fast response..!
I just wrote them to know if there is actually a "store" or if it's just a "via Web orders" store, since there's no mention of "business hours" nowhere on their site...

I am not sure which way you are coming in, but Markertek has a lot in stock. They are located off Exit 20 on the New York State Thruway.

I WOULD stop at B&H if I were you though. They have an awful lot of stuff in there.

Oh, they have a store--but it doesn't front the street. You have to up stairs--it is actually a very cool layout, although as I said, they don't have huge stock. Again, I can't tell you how many hours I have spent in there just talking to the guys who really know their stuff. I even hired one of them as soundguy on one of my shoots.

rex': it IS probably the store this guy told me about. I did more search and can't see what else...
I'll contact them for quotes before going so I'll be sure to get what I want if prices are great and they have to order some stuff.
Thanks again guys.

Futz, if you're in NYC, you gonna make the B&H Voice Over Clinic? The HDV Solutions Tour? The Vegas 6 Training day? It would be great to meet you.

I just checked the dates and unfornately, I'm back home sunday just before cause I'm leaving again on 20th-2st (flight still to confirm) to "shoot some wolves near Vlad Dracul's land"... next time !
Fact is, next time will probably be even better since I'm not crossing the fence to HDVland before a little more time...( unless Schoeps, Lectrosonics, Sanken and Ambient make it *free* for me, now THAT would help! )

Best place I've found to buy audio bits from in the USA is Sweetwater.com, not in NY from memory but I gotta give these guys a plug. I emailed them a question and withing 30 minutes they'd rung me and I'm literaly half a world a way. The guy didn't have the answer right away (I wanted to know if they could ship cheaper using DHL) and he rang me back in 10 mins to say yes.
They're more a musicial instrument kind of outfit but despite that they do seem to have everything audio available.
Bob.

If you’re going to be in NYC, I would check out Manny’s Music and Sam Ash Music. They are right next to each other on 48th Street between 6th & 7th Avenues. Both have pro audio and recording departments and both claim they will beat anyone’s price (including and especially each others). ;-)

I've never understood how this works...theoretically couldn't one go back and forth getting lower bids from the two stores until the item was free? : )

Yes in theory, but real life never follows theory. ;-)

Actually, if you read the fine print, it must be an "advertised" price. So if both give you a lower price, neither of those are "advertised" prices and the buck stops there. The idea is not to accept the published price but to get them to give you that little extra off to beat their competitor.

Check Markertek's website as I mentioned above to see if they have what you want. If you are "coming from up North" as you say and you are taking the NYS Thruway. You will be going right by it anyway and there are plenty of free parking spaces to boot.
