OT - Acid

Hi

I don't want to ask this in the Acid forums because I want to see what video editors experience is when using this product.

My current project I had budgeted for royalty music but wasn't going to be able to use much as budget isn't high. I then started to notice the mention of Acid and Acid loops on this board. I did a bit of digging and downloaded Acid demo and Propellorheads Reason. I hadn't realised such programmes existed acctually ...

Anyway - Acid seems the logical one as its interface is so similar to Vegas.

Buuutttt.... A bit of playing around and it seems fairly foreign. How do you create the sounds that are looped (other than sampling in, etc?

I don't want an involved explanation of how Acid works, just interested whether others have decided to use it for video creation and how they found it to use? Someone also mentioned collections of loops to use in it. Are these easily available? Expensive? I'm also a guitar/bass player and have 4-5 guitars here that I could sample, but I don't necessarily want all guitar type sounds for tracks anyway. I have classical training in music from years ago and can sight read when playing, but this layour is nothing like a traditiional score.

Anyway - is it worth pursuing? What is the learning curve? (I found the Vegas learning curve very easy, but have not messed around with any music programmes at all). Where to find extras for it?

Cheers

You buy loops, or you can create them. To create them, you need either ACID or Sound Forge, they can be recorded in Acid, Forge, or Vegas.
I believe that this is the future for video editors. Apple's Soundtrack isn't even being marketed for the music industry, it's exclusively being marketed to video editors/FCP folks. (Soundtrack is the Apple clone of ACID)
Anyway, it's an EASY learning curve, not to mention the 115 ACID libraries available from Sony and the over 300 3rd party libraries. The loops sound amazing as they are great performances in most instances, by very good musicians.
www.jefferypfisher.com has lots of ACID tutorials, and there are a couple ACID tutorials on the Sundance site, plus www.acidplanet.com is loaded with info.
Acid doesn't cost very much in basic forms, without midi support and softsynths or surround support it's only $70.00 Click on Products up above in this forum, you can look at the ACID libes. Anyone, from small children to non-musical adults can make good music in Acid. Anyone with a musical background can make GREAT music with Acid. I'm shocked that you aren't really familiar with it if you are into music at all. Ricky Martin to Guns n' Roses, Celine Dion to David Was use Acid.

:-) I'd rather play it live than have it packaged so haven't gone looking for a programme like this.

Usually the docos I work on have a budget of $10-$15k for music so I get a mate to write stuff and record it (he owns two sounds studios). However this time the whole budget including shooting is $15k so I'm looking for all options I can.

Sounds good though, I was pretty sure it wouldn't be too hard to learn although I have a few weeks of solid editing ahead of me where I won't have too much spare time to play with new programmes, but it sounds like it will be worth the effort.

Cheers

PS I bet they don't just use acid. Coke, grass, the lot!

Here's a suggestion...

Do a search for the user "mD" in the Acid forums. He's VERY knowledgeable as far as working with Acid is concerned AND he has a site you can visit to see what he could create for you( http://www.rodelworks.com/ ). Basically an Acid user for hire.
Maybe you could buy music for your project that you know has been made using Acid for this time while you learn to use Acid for the next projects.

Hi guys

Just sat down to check out some Acid tutorials and the link that Spot sent me shows as broken:
www.jefferypfisher.com
I searched on google for jerry fisher and acid and couldn't find anything. Can someone check that URL or point me to the correct one?

Cheers

There's a couple good books available for Acid 3.0 from Amazon. Since Acid is up to version 4, the price has dropped quite a bit.
The information given is still valuable/usable.

Ahh - there's the problem - you spelled it differently the first time.

Checking now.
