OT: ADVC 55 Any experience?

was looking at it and it's the perfect size, just wanting to know if it's gonna provide as good a conversion as the 100/110, and if anyone knows if it allows me to send out via IEEE and out the S-Vid.

Thanks for any input.

Dave

BTW - anyone here use a DAC-100 (is that going to be comperable to an ADVC 100/110?)

Dave,
The 55 should be no different than the 100/110 as far as conversion quality is concerned.
Sorry but the 55 is analog-to-DV conversion only :-(
From various posts here, there seems to be a love/hate relationship with the DAC-100.

I've thought about going the D8 camcorder route for the ability to do pass thru, the "?" is will it maintain the color etc... well?

I'm mainly using it for output to my production monitor, I have the pass thru on my DVX going now, but I don't like having to leave that sit out. Just makes me feel a little uneasy.

Except for my complaint in another thread here (assuming this is inherent on all converters), I like the Sony pass through a lot. Just pay attention to the 'contrast'. I've had to make adjustments, depending on my source video, of between 0 and 18% more contrast (almost always old VHS or SVHS). It's a really good converter, if you don't want 'dropped frames'. (thanks to TBC and Noise Reduction)
It may not be your favorite 3 ccd fancy camera, but it would make a great additional emergency camera. These Sony D8s look great in daylight.
I paid about $300 for a used Sony TRV-730 on Ebay. (everything on it worked and it came with a massive battery that lasts for about 7 hours and a cheap case)
I'm the guy who complained about the Datavideo DAC-100. It's not a bad converter, it's just not as clean as the Sony and it did drop a lot of frames (no TBC). This would look like 2 or 3 minutes of black on the timeline, even though only a few frames were supposedly dropped. (you'd have to chop out that stuff and stitch everything back together and still may be missing a fraction of a second, here and there, from the edited pieces). So, I say TBC will help a lot, especially for old tape conversions.

I use an ADS Tech Pyro A/V Link and I love it. They can be had for $169 which is slightly less than the ADVC-55 and they go both ways (Analog-Digital-Analog). They even have component, composite & S-Video out which is nice. I think the colors are a little truer on capture than the Canopus.
