Let me clarify: I was working in a warm building on top of the ice. I am not a scientist. But the scientists drilling the core hole will come into the bar and have a few drinks and of course I would be there if my shift permitted. Then the conversation would get down to, "What are you guy's doing? Well after all that I found it amazing that after a C-130 with skii's ride the ice cores would be intact. Later on it was the Twin Outter. Our water was created from a drag line that brought snow into a melter and then filtered the water. The filters had to be changed once per week as they were plugged with oil and grease from the three cat's that pushed snow all day long. Once there was a dead fox in the water. The buildings are still there almost snow covered but abandoned. There was a garbage dump along with the sewage dump and I forgot what they did with the used diesel oil. A thousand years from now scientists will wonder what the hell was there? The sewage ran out a tunnel a quarter mile from the building into a hole and the resulting heat would take it down about 60 ft and then spread out into a huge thingy. There would be a plethora of red stakes on top to warn the dozers not to drive over it. (1959 thru 1991)

JJKizak, thanks for clarifying , but still working on the ice ( even in a warm building) requires a certain "lets get the job done" attitude for that length of time. Science, as you seen, is still a lot of trial and error testing. with most mostly errors. As you note, waste management really was not considered "critically important" at most sites, budget considerations were limited. From your description of the waste problem, I assume lots of meat and sugar loaded diets were common because of the cold, creating ------ a form of the "China Syndrome" '-)

(1959-1991) well, only the Russians were successfully using sat radar mapping (78-91), mostly sea floors, islands for the tactical considerations first, science second, and they were not sharing at that time. The US was a lot slower using a powerful enough radar for penetration because of power requirements. The Russians just added Nuclear batteries as needed, we were extremely slow at looking at these systems because of the 60s issues of nuclear power. But over time, and $$$, improved ic tech help this issue, just like cell phones.

JJKizak, do you a website with any pictures of your experience in Greenland, Canada or Iceland?
