OT: Analog Captures and Noise

Since Im laid up for a bit, I got a HDTV Wonder card from ATI so I can capture some HD shows. This card also allows for a cable TV connection as well. I captured a couple cable shows (not HD) tonight and could not believe the amount of noise it captured. Now, I may have read once before why analog captures shows the noise in the video while my TV does not. One would think since it comes from the exact same analog feed, it should appear the same.

Can someone please explain to me why my analog captures look like crap on the pc while my analog feed into my TV looks clearer without all the noise.

BTW: the HD this card captures is really nice, just wish my analog captures looked better.

Not trying to be impatient but this is really starting to piss me off with just how bad these captures are. Is there anyway that my captures can look the same as they do on a TV?

which ATI MMC you use makes a LOT of difference ..

the older 9.02 seems the best right now

you might also want to consider DScaler, a lot of people swear by this - i have no experience though with it...

I am using MMC 9.08. The files on the install were crap and it took me forever to get the drivers and working properly. The latest files on ATI's site seemed to have fixed the problem of getting the card recognized but Im just not thrilled with the analog captures. If I used the S-Video connection instead of the RF composite, any chance I will get a better capture?

I've tried for several years to get my ATI 8500DV to capture something decently. I never fully succeeded. You have a newer card, so things may be different. Here are some hints:

1. MMC doesn't work very well. It is OK when capturing in its native format, but it does a poor job capturing to MPEG, and an absolutely terrible job capturing using any external encoder (I tried using the MainConcept DV encoder and the Huffyuv encoder).

2. I was able to get the VirtualDub capture to work pretty well. There is even a version of VirtualDub that includes start/stop timers and other primitive PVR functions.

3. For more help with all things related to your problem, visit this site:

Despite the name, it is primarily focused on the ATI capture issues. Extremely helpful. Make sure you visit this section: Multimedia Discussion and Technical Support.
