I don't know how this guy does this stuff. I'm assuming that most of it is digital fabrication based on actual data. Really cool stuff. I especially love the video of all the commercial flights in the air.

To answer your question as best I can; most of the CGI programs these days can import data to define where things and what they are, are to be placed.
