a record player? Specificly, one that will play 16" in diamiater 33 1/3 RPM transcripton records?

I've got these glass LP's from the 40's that I'm restoring & I REALLY need to get these records onto PC and the only player I have access to is to small. I won't mail them out so it needs to be local for me to be usefull.

You can post here or e-mail me @ fjrhftp <at> localnet.com

Thanks!

Wow! That may not be easy. The standard size is 12". There probably aren't many record players still in existance and operational that will handle that large a disc. Check with some college radio stations. There may be a few old DJ turntables lying around that have a long enough tonearm and not have any other obtructions sticking up from the top surface to get in the way.

Small world... I'm origionally from Buffalo, (although in Orlando now.) My mother has a performing arts center on Lakeshore Rd. in Woodlawn and most likely still has the type of turn table you're talking about. She switched to minidisc years ago but all these dance teachers going back to the time that LP's came around used them extensively right up until recently. I've seen the type of records you're talking about being played on them. If she doesn't you could try Sue Bernas on Camp Rd. or Judy Piccard on Milestrip. Let me make some phone calls. What area are you in?

Oh wait... you're talking 16 inch, Try Dave musial, he used to live on Lake Ave Orchard Park, Might be in NYC right now but I can find out. I saw one of these at WKBW Ch. 7 a few years back but that was at their old location.
I'll keep looking.

I live in West Valley (just sounth of Springville on the Erie/Catt countie borders) but the records are located in Athol Springs (right next to St. Francis HS, right across from the lake).

What's the art center name? I could stop there on my way home today... :)

Royale Center... at Lakeshore (5) & Lake Ave. 5 minutes away from St Francis. Call Bernadine at 208-9911, she knows the whole story.

Ends up your mom doesn't have a player big enough for the record, but she gave me the number of someone who might. :)

One last possibility... Fle market on Walden Ave. Pick up something you don't mind cutting up. Remove and re-mount the tone arm farther from the center. Cut the arm in half, re-splice the wires, and splice the arm longer. It doesn't have to look good, it only has to play the record collection once. Should be several dozen ways to accomplish this. ...plastic tubing, electrical tape, popsicle sticks, whatever. If the arm gets heavy, counter weight it. If it has a strobe speed control and it's too high, stack some 12 inch albumns up and put the pad on top of them. This is not really that difficult, record players are ancient and low teck.
