I find myself with one free day in Brussels, of all places, this week. Thursday the 20th i'll be hanging out there with not much to do but see the sights. Any locals wanna give an out-of-towner a tour?
Belgium has the world's best "pommes frites," known in the U.S. as "French fries."
After you eat some of theirs, you will never think of "fries" in the same way...
They also have great ales, but there is such a truly wide variety that you have to spend some time getting used to it all.
They do have great chocolate in Belgium, but I beg to differ about the Godiva we get here, it is made with inferior ingredients (to prolong shelf life).
All the food there is good. The first time I was in Brussels, I had just just driven from some place in Germany on a fluke, decided to go to Belgium for lunch. Well, the food was so good that I stayed for dinner... :O)
La Grande Place is magnificent, smack in the center of town. To call it a "city square" doesn't do it justice in any way.
certainly wouldn't argue about the godiva we get abroad, but the home grown is, well... homer dribbling hasn't a thing on it. then again, if you're passing one of the 100's of speciality choco shops, you'll be in for a real, memorable feast.
i spent a week there back in the late 80's shooting a doco on nato. it was a bit hectic, but i certainly remember the food, and the rest of the crew assured me that the liquid refreshment was second to none....
All sounds very interesting. I just got the address of the conference i'll be attending on Wednesday and it's between the 3M building and the Nato building.
Sadly it looks like the weather will be cold, dark, windy, and rainy the whole time i'm there. Seems like a good day to concentrate on museums.
The NATO building area is boring, just take a taxi to La Grand Place. There you'll find lots of sights, and chocolate, and ales, all within very easy walking distance.
