It's not a great tripod and it's only is rated for 4.4LB but I found this super deal for a begginer who wants an unbeatable valued tripod. Follow the link to B&H:

I'm buying the Bogen 3021 with the 501 fluid head. Anyone think I can do better for mid range video sticks?

I don't know what kind of deal you'll get on this in the US but the Miller Solo tripod seems like a very clever idea for a one man shoot. The unique thing is you can lock eack leg at a different angle and deploy it with one hand.

The 3221WN which is what I finally got (WN for Wilderness - all stainless fittings) does the same. Independant leg angles and one-action quick leg lock. Also center pole rotates to horizontal for table top and ground shots. Takes up to 13.5 lb. With 501 Pro fluid head with pan and tilt adjutable teflon friction it came to US $310.00

The stainless fittings sound like a good idea. We have a LOT of trouble with tripods geing used on beaches. The sand is easy enough to deal with but the salt causes terrible corrosion leading to locked threads etc.

When I get some time I'm going to make some tripod 'booties'. Just short length of PVC pipe with a glued on endcap. That way the tripod legs can sit inside the booties protected from the sand and salt. Of course getting the clients to USE them will be another matter.

Bob:

I know what you mean. I live in Southern California and do a lot of beach and surf shots and I hate the sand when it gets up in the legs and they stick. With the stainles fittings I figure I can take the sticks under the beach showers.

I had a look at that tripod and I'm quite keen on the Manfrotto gear. Only problem with not using Miller or Satchler sticks for us is most of the alternatives don't have the feet that latch onto our dollies.

By the way if you're after a really neat dolly system the Spider Dolly from Losmandy is just brilliant, being able to fit a tracked dolly that'll go around a corner, into the average car is so handy.
