OT: Batch resizer program for slideshows?

I have been using a paid Coffeecup resizing program for batch resizing of jpegs for slideshows for quite a while now and it really is excellent. Are there any free options that are just as good? I have a friend in need of this kind of program and would like to recommend a free option if there is a good one available.

I've been using IrfanView for several years now and really like it.
It does batch resizing, batch renaming and a lot more.
Check it out.

I'm just checking Irfanview out. Yeah it looks really good. Lots of options, including the ability to set a maximum dimension of the shortest side of the output file (which is of course the one that is most important) regardless of the size of the input file.
