OT -Be Grateful - Vegas is damn cheap compared to

These are the official Dolby Digital software encoders available from DD directly.. They work a treat, and offer DD+ and DDTrueHD
However they dont come without a price...

A princely sum of 8grand will get you the encoder...
Now admittadly, its good for those who want to offer a higher quality encode, and the cost reflects this, but when you consider how much we pay for an NLE, whcih includes all the mastering tools we could possibly need, WITh the encoder, then Vegas is chump change compaared to this..

Im surprised its more expensive than the DTS encoder though...

that's three licenses though, so it's $2666, so I could have a copy & so could two people I work with. Neat!

It's only for mac though. :( Don't see a windows version.

Most NLE's today are coming with Dolby encoding of some kind or other... even the cheap Ulead stuff. The difference is the licensing that doesn't come with them, and the restrictions that do.

In general, I am quite satisfied with the price of Vegas given the features you get for it. I'm sure if I was a pro, I'd find it limiting, but for me, it's the perfect sandbox and will keep my interest for years. I would wish for more timely response from tech support, even if you had to pay a bit extra to get faster response (many big software vendors offer gold and platinum support with guaranteed response times). Right now, it can take 3-5 days to get a response. By time they get around to responding, I've already tried what they suggest and found it to not work. Very frustrating indeed.

Sony do offer Gold and Platinum toll-free telephone support packages. As a registered owner of one of the "Pro" applications (Vegas 8 Pro) you have a free Gold Plan for 60 days following the activation of the Plan. Details here.

I don't know if these plans are worth paying for but if you are in the US or Canada you can at least take advantage of the free one. (I'm in the UK so I don't even get the chance.)

Nothing at all. It was posted for QueenGeek's benefit as it seemed to me (from the message that it was a comment to) that she was unaware that the facility whose absence she was bemoaning did actually exist.

My apologies for hijacking your thread.

Sorry. I was commenting specifically on the "cheap" aspect rather than the comparison. I was simply trying to say that I think it's a good value, regardless of what it is compared to. No intent to hijack the thread.

Dolby's encoder does more than DD for DVDs and I think that's the price jump.

Vegas has always been a fantastic deal!!!

OT: I was called 3 hours before a show to edit a video that was crashing another
NLE. Work flow of Vegas allowed to gather and edit almost 17 years of video clips
and create an impressive pre-show video. Vegas, IMHO, is much better than some
other fruity program that has had so much hype.
