No difference in sound, but if you use condenser mics, you'll definitely want phantom to save hassle, batteries, and time.

Anything that allows you to boost the signal into the camera is going to be a plus. Not sure if the Beachtek with phantom will do that. I have the passive one, which doesn't. Haven't taken the GL2 out on its rounds yet, but I wasn't too happy with the GL1's noise floor and always shot with Mic Att ON and cranked the trim on the mics, pre-camera. That gave me a good Sig-to-NR. Just "plugging a mic in" wasn't a fun time. Looking forward to checking out the GL2 and seeing if it was improved.

Phantom power has no effect on the audio, it simply provides power to condenser mics that need it. If you use dynamic mics then they ignore the phantom power and no harm is done.

If you get the Beachtek with phantom power, make sure you switch the 48v phantom power off *unless* you actually need it.

What microphones are you considering?

The latest model DXA-8 does have and includes limiting. Around $360
