Are Blu-ray players also recorders in Japan or was the author of the article a little confused?

90% of the demand for dvd players in Japan has been for player - recorders for a long time. Their market strategy has been not to sell those in the US. Both Sony and Toshiba market Hi-Def player - recorders in Japan as well as other manufacturers.

In the US we get TiVo.

Japan has always had lots of models of electronic equipment many of us would love to have. I still edit with a Sony WV-DR9 that I bought from someone in Japan. It rivals much more expensive Sony Broadcast equipment sold here in the US, but at a fraction of the cost.

Needless to say, it is very well made.

Here is a story about a Sharp Blu-Ray player that won't be sold in the US.
Pioneer also sells Japan only player-recorders.

Blu-ray.com has a picture of 14 Blu-Ray recorders.

Blu-Ray and HD DVD recorders have been available in Japan for well over a year now.

High Definition TV content has also been available for much longer in Japan than in the US.
