OT: Broadcasting Colleges...

PunkDrummer wrote on 4/12/2005, 4:28 PM
Hey, i'm gonna be graduating soon and i thought i'd start thinking about what college i'd like to go to. But problem is, out here in idaho we don't have ANY broadcasting colleges. I've looked around and haven't really found any colleges with broadcasting even in the area....

So my question is, does anybody know if there is a GOOD broadcasting college around idaho (or bordering states)?

Thanks
-William

Here's a site to get you stated including scolarship information. A degree program may or may not be that helpful depending on your career path. You're still in high school, so don't box yourself in.

One way to get your foot in the door so to speak if you want to be in front of the TV camera instead of behind the scenes or in some other area is (I'm semi serious) consider becoming a TV weatherman. Many have gone on to bigger things. I happen to known one of the on air weather guys in my area and since its a major maket he gets a nice seven figure income for basically standing in front of a green screen waving his arms and offering some joke and small talk once in awhile. Not that bad a way to earn a buck, but you got to pay your dues in some little towns before you have a chance to crack the big time.

BYU has an outstanding school there, for broadcast and film. I don't think/know if the Ricks campus has anything, but Provo does.

Talk to Cheno. His school is actually involved in dev'ng college curriculums. BTW, I'm not LDS/Mormon either...but find it a great school. There are a lot of non-Mormon people at BYU. But they do have pretty tight rules there. University of Utah also has a school, with two television programs.
San Francisco State University has a terrific program, but that's a long way from Boise.

I believe so. I haven't taught there this year, so I'm not sure how the program has changed, if at all.

I know a lot of people here who went through the SF State program. What I see out of them is that they generally know each other and seem to find work through each other.

So, you might want to consider that you'll be at an advantage if you settle in the region you went to school in.

I noticed this lighing interviews and the big software companies as well. The people starting and running those companies often knew each other from Stanford. Moral of the story is that colleges create connections that can serve you well later on.
