OT: CD/DVD burning software...

I am looking to back up several of my video elements (video, stills, sound FX, etc.) in a data DVD format.

It looks like Nero and Roxio pretty much rule the roost with respect to availablilty. I have had serious issues with the newer Nero software and I was very underwhelmed with Roxio software a few years back.

Question: Is there anything else others use here (successfully) that would make a data DVD and is not from Nero or Roxio?

I have been able to use the Windows XP built-in CD burning capabilities in some limited useage. I am looking for a commercial package though.

Any thoughts on this from you all would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

i've found nero 7 to be ok. roxio seems a bit iffy. i have friends who swear by gear, and quite a few who seem very happy with some of the open software free ones (well, they are free, and pretty reliable).

i'm as intrested as you are in knowing what everyone uses....

i like, and often use nero's multiple burn option.

i have nero 8. i just use the burning rom part, nothing else. i've never had an issue with that from version 3 to now.

I use ULEAD Burn Now, which comes a part of the MF6+ package. Nice interface, no problems in two years.

Nero 8 is pretty good especially for doing Dual Layer stuff.

I've used Nero for years, but got off the Nero upgrade train at Nero7. It's good software, but they've hung so many bits and pieces onto it over the years it's become laughable. All I really want is a burning program. In fact, I have little need for the "official" Nero, and use NeroExpress instead. It does everything I want and the interface is elegantly simple but not limiting.

Okay, come to think of it, I use other Nero bits a lot also. After trying out various other programs, I use Nero Cover Designer to build my disk and CD/DVD box layouts. And, of course, the Nero CD/DVD speed utility is very useful to see how well the burning process went.

The one thing that my version of Nero doesn't do well is double layer burning. For that, I've used CopyToDVD, a burning program that has rapidly improved over the past few years and which has been bullet-proof for DVD+R Double Layer projects. You can see the pdf manual here.

>>...I've used CopyToDVD...

Ya' know, that was just the thing I needed. Bought it. Done.

Thanks for the info.

I just acquired my daughter's laptop for capturing files in the field, and wanted some DVD burning software for it. I found great software that is free, burns to double-sided DVDs, etc. I've used it twice and it's slick. Here it is:

I was using Nero for years and got tired of each release getting more and more bloated. so... I found a fantastic free tool that is up to date and has worked on every machine I've tried: Img Burn. It's tiny (less than 5 meg?) and burns data cd and dvd, as well as iso's and more. It's also worked great for dual layer dvd's.

I got away from Nero, but don't exactly remember why. I've been using Roxio Media Creater 7.0 for several year with no problems. I have used it many time to copy data files to dvd.
When I copy dvd's, my one computer has two burners and I can copy to either or both at the same time. I don't know if it would do more than two. I'll have to experiment next time I open the case.

That's (CDBurnerXP) what I've been using for the last few years and I've been very happy with it as a general purpose burner. Didn't realize there was a new version so thanks for mentioning it.

Free is just fine by me :-)

StarBurn.

Easy to use. Not bloated, and the best thing..... it's free.

I was using Nero 6 and getting coasters from Verbatim 8x DVD+R with my Dell Precision laptop so I tried Img Burn at John Cline's recommendation and the discs I burn with it play fine. It appears to be by the same guy that wrote DVD Decrypter. So far I'm really liking it and it's free.
