Am looking for the cheapest HDV camera to essentially use as a transfer deck in studio. Sort of wierd that a camera will be cheaper than a deck, but that seems to be the way of it. Guess it's economies of scale, etc.
sony HDR-HC3 1200.00 or so,,
welcome to my world,, i used to have a panny mini dv deck and the lightbulb went off, sold it on ebay for more than i paid for it new, bought a 300.00 cam and works every bit as well as the deck did,, soooo i bought the above cam as my hdv deck and also my vacation camcorder.
dv decks are better cause of the robust shuttle ability and the a a a other stuff,,, you will hear in a minute or two.
The little Canon HDV Palmcorder when it hits the streets. Not only is it tiny it seems to take usable footage and decent stills. The other upside is as afr as I know it'll handle all the Sony HDV variants plus the Canon footage.
Just keep in mind that ALL these cheap HDV cameras are bottom loaders. Not exactly convenient to use as a VCR if you've got a lot of tapes to deal with and a power and 1394 cable connected to the thing. Plus getting into and using the menu isn't that easy if you've got the camera snuggled away somewhere.
