OT: Clip capture from Sony DSR-11

I received a MiniDV source tape from a new client yesterday. Popped it in my DSR-11 deck and started capturing (clip at a time) and found that each time the tape reached a spot where the client stopped his camera (not paused, but stopped the tape and turned off the camera) the DSR-11 deck would stop playing and start re-winding. Very annoying. I managed to get though capturing 26 clips from the tape with this happening between each and every scene.

I had never noticed this behaviour before, so I did a little investigating and discovered a "feature" (the old Sony UMatics had this as well) -- Auto Repeat. Apparently, if turned on, the deck will stop and rewind if a break in control track occurs. So, either this switch had gotten turned on accidently, or it has always been turned on and the "feature" only showed up with this particular tape.

Anyway -- if anyone has this happen to them, the "auto repeat" switch is not in the menu options or on the front of the deck. It's on the back of the deck.

Another trap with the DSR-11 is the PAL/NTSC switch which is also hidden on the back.
Be careful rewinding the small shell DV tapes with a DSR-11, the large "DVCAM" sized tapes never caused me a problem, the small "DV" sized ones I've had loose the plot several time and tapes snapped twice. Never hit Stop while rewinding seems the safest.

Not sorry to have replace my DSR-11 with a HVR-M5P,

Bob.

morning bob, hope you're cooler down there than we are up here.....

had to let my 11 go when i moved to hdv. however, in almost 5 years of abuse my 11 never gave me any cause for concern, incl. stopping mid way through fast fwd / rev.

so far the 15 has performed impeccably - though i find i have to play a tape for it to switch (in auto mode) to the right format. yes, i could leave it on hdv, or sd, but then with my failing brain cells i won't know what's happened when vegas wont capture ;-)
