OT Computer Problems

I've been having issues with ZoneAlarm and today on my desktop it (ZA) flipped out and stated I needed to reboot etc. Followed the ZA instructions and can't get it to work at all now. PLUS...now I can only stay on the net for about 5 mins at a time. After that, I have to completely reboot. This is much worse than the issues I was having before. Before I could just close ZA and then stay on the net.

I've uninstalled ZA, ran antivirus and then ran antiviurs online (found and disinfected one virus) but I still can't stay on.......

Anyone know how to read a HijackThis report? Any other ideas?

Talk about a major pain...After a while, the only thing that would show in my browser (both IE and FF) was an error page from ZA. Couldn't get past it at all. All it would let me do was d/l ZA again (hey thanks....I need more copies of a problem program). I downloaded again and uninstalled again....still didn't work. Got on the laptop and found out there might be one file hiding out from the uninstall. Found it, deleted it and everything seems to be working again.

Alternatives to ZA anyone?

ps Thanks for the hijackthis link....didn't find any problems but it's a good site to have handy to read the log when needed.

Thanks for the feedback. Been using ZoneAlarm since they've come out.

ZoneAlarm was created by a group of programmers who left Borland. Brilliantly executed program that has been more solid than most programs written the last 8 years.

My guess is that someone has found out a vulnerability. You should send any logs/info to them so they have info to work from.

For it's track record, ZA is the best. No alternative.

I agree it is a great program....been using it for many years here as well. Seems ever since I upgraded several months back I've been having more and more problems leading up to tonight. Been reading about some issues....I have a link to an older version and will probably try going back in time to a more stable version.

Boomhower,
Did you ever try either of the two versions I mentioned
here?

Also,
If HijackThis found any BHO's, Remove them ALL.

John,

That is the link I was talking about earlier (thanks again by the way). On this particular machine it wasn't a very big issue until this weekend (was having the biggest problem on the laptop and it didn't appear to be ZA related) so I hadn't uninstalled yet as you suggested. After this incident and now that I finally have it completely off the desktop (that was an ordeal in itself) I'll be d/l one of those older versions.

winXP Service Pack2's firewall is pretty good. Since it's the most common it should be the most compatible and widely supported.
