I'm just wondering if this would infringe on copyright or if it falls under the parody use? - is it only infringing (if it is) because of the syncing issue?
People starting OT threads then attempting to control the responses by using insulting all caps and bold remarks as to what kind of response they're looking for in my view show a particular lack of maturity.
If you start a thread, by doing so you are opening up the topic you want to talk about for general discussion. If you don't like or fear some of the responses you may get, maybe you should have given better thought as to why you started the thread in THIS forum in the first place since it has nothing to do with Vegas. Specifically, I mean if you only wanted some people to respond or were only interested in some narrow view that agrees with yours there's something called email. Perhaps you've heard of it.
The original Greek, Latin, and Aramaic texts are all considered to be public domain. However, various translations can be and are copywrited. In particular, one of the most popular translations is the New International Version. This translation was prepared by, and is copyright 1973, 1978, 1984 by the International Bible Society. They actively seek out and put pressure on anyone using material from that translation without permission.
"Weird Al" Yankovic made a good living parodying songs, writing new lyrics to the original melodies. I wouldn't say he got away with it though since supposedly he got proper permission from the producers of the original songs.
As to if this is a protected pardody, I would expect it is.
You can say it's a direct argument of the original song and video and it parodies the licentiousness of the orginal song.
Here's an article on how parody is applied. It also discusss a case that comes from the opposite side of "Baby Got Book." 2 Live Crew recorded a song called Pretty Woman and was sued by the owner's of the copyright of the Roy Orbison version. The Supreme Court ruled in favor of 2 Live crew.
Everybody in this game needs a lawyer, even if you don't need a broadcast monitor you do need a lawyer. Maybe Sony can do a bundled deal, buy Vegas and get a coupon for 4 free hours with an IP lawyer, that should cover the first five minute phone call.
Bit of a laugh really, I'm trying to ring mine now, nothing to do with IP though but I might see how he pans out on that front as well, kinda getting to the stage where I need proper legals.
